FROSTBURG — One person died in a fire in the 200 block of Center Street in Frostburg Tuesday afternoon, according to the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal.
Firefighters from multiple counties responded to the blaze around 3 p.m.
The victim was been preliminarily identified as a 50-year-old female occupant of the home, the fire marshal’s office said. Her body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, where she will be positively identified, and the cause of death will be determined.
“Our engine and truck company arrived to find a two-story apartment house on fire,” Frostburg Fire Department Assistant Chief Doug Hanson said. “The fire was in the rear of the building.”
The victim was located in her bed on the first floor shortly after firefighters entered the residence, Hanson said.
Investigators said the fire originated within the victim’s bedroom, but the cause remains under investigation. Smoke alarms activated during the fire; however, investigators said the victim had preexisting medical conditions and was unable to walk.
An adult male occupant who was not home at the time of the fire was displaced, and a second-floor apartment was unoccupied.
The residence is located near Frostburg State University.
Emergency personnel from Allegany and Garrett counties in Maryland and Mineral County in West Virginia responded.
