A Whitfield County man has been charged with the Saturday murder of a man on Princeton Way.
J. Mayelo Puentes, 28, of 105 Princeton Way, Dalton, is charged with murder (non-family gun) and possession of a firearm/knife during the commission of a felony for the death of Ulysis Garcia, 38.
According to a statement from Sheriff Darren Pierce, deputies received a call around 7:23 a.m. regarding a shooting on Princeton Way.
“Whitfield County investigators along with agents from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation were called to conduct an investigation,” Pierce said.
The statement said Garcia was taken to Hamilton Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.
“This was not a stranger-on-stranger thing,” said Pierce. “These two men had known each other for some time.”
The statement said Puentes turned himself in to deputies Saturday evening.
“He certainly knew that we were looking for him,” Pierce said. “It was all over social media, and he turned himself in without incident.”
Puentes remained in the county jail without a bond Monday with a court date to be determined.
