NEWBURYPORT — Swordfights, trolls, marriage therapy — and lots of laughs.
That’s the prescription for an unusual new stage comedy running at the Firehouse Wednesday through Sunday.
The world premiere of “Things Get Ugly” features newlywed actors preparing to go onstage together — one transforming into a hideous ogre while the audience looks on — and “banter sparkling with Noel Coward-style wit,” according to early reviews.
Written by North Shore humorist and Salem News columnist Doug Brendel, the comedy is “practically a transcript of our marriage,” the playwright’s wife said.
To complicate matters, the show is directed by their daughter, Lydia Charlotte Brendel.
Things Get Ugly stars longtime professional actors Tara Johns and Justin Demers. In a challenging twist, the real-life actors will swap roles with each performance.
