WEST POINT — The town of West Point eying potential purchase which could potentially expand the footprint of its municipal sports complex.
Councilmember Steve Link, head of the town’s planning and development committee, broached the topic of looking into acquiring roughly two acres of land which separates the sports complex from Alabama Highway 157 during Monday night’s council meeting, August 19.
“I’d like to revisit a topic we talked about briefly about several months ago for a possible baseball park extension,” Link said. “I’d like to talk about the property that’s for sale that’s between the town hall property and [Hwy.] 157.”
The council authorized Link to speak with the property owner and negotiate a price to purchase the land and report back at a later date.
Link said if all goes well, he would like for the first priority for the property to be expanding the park’s current parking area. He said visitors currently rely heavily on parking in the nearby West Point Baptist Church parking lot and has himself, at times, had to circle the lot several times when attending games.
Link also said the property could be used to expand the existing walking trails located around the park’s perimeter.
