WEST NEWBURY — Local resident Amy Friend is a semifinalist in the American Quilter’s Society QuiltWeek competition being held Aug. 21-24 in Grand Rapids, Mich., at the DeVos Place Convention Center.
Friend has been chosen to display the quilt “Glitch” along with 377 others in this contest.
First, second and third place, along with honorable mention prizes in seven categories, will be awarded along with seven overall awards, including Best of Show.
Winners will be announced at the show and posted on the AQS website, americanquilter.com. More than $54,000 will be granted to contest winners, including $10,000 for Best of Show and $3,500 each for Best Wall.
Regardless of how “Glitch” places in the final judging, all semifinalist quilts will be displayed at the show, which is expected to draw more than 13,000 people.
“The quilts on display continue to get better each year as the technology and creativity of the quilter continues to evolve. The attendees will have no shortage of inspiration to continue or start new projects of their own. We are so thankful for our sponsors, everyone who enters our contest, vendors at our shows, and those who stop by to see the art,” AQS President Bill Schroeder said.
AQS hosts several shows annually, each with its own contest. Besides the Grand Rapids show, AQS also hosts shows in Daytona Beach, Fla.; Paducah, Ky.; Branson, Mo; and Lancaster County, Pa.
Quilts were entered into this international contest from 40 states and 10 countries.
