GIRLS OUTDOOR TRACK
Pingree’s Odiase makes history: Pingree senior Ashra Odiase became the best girls shot putter in Eastern Independent League history Saturday, claiming her fourth straight EIL title in the event with a throw of 32 feet 8 inches. Eve Veloz was second in the long jump (16-1), Allie Stella fourth in the javelin (74-5), and the 4×100 relay of Odiase, Keely O’Bryan, Time Odiase-Lawani and Veloz also took fourth (52.73). Claiming sixth place finishes were Izzy DiGiovanni (javelin, 65-2), Botta (triple jump, 30-5 1/2 and 300 hurdles, 51.52) and Botta, Mady Whelpley, DiGiovanni and Veloz (4×400 relay, 4:39.99) as Pingree placed sixth in the team standings.
Peabody girls win NEC Frosh/Soph crown: Avani Ingham won both the triple jump and 400 meters as Peabody took home the Northeastern Conference’s Freshman/Sophomore Meet title with 133 points. Marianna Pinto Gomez (shot put), Ella Braz (2-mile), Lauren Foley, Braz, Olivia Del Valle and Lily Murphy in the 4×100 (with a new meet record), and Ingham, Braz, Lilah Trombley and Foley in the 4×400 were all winners. The Tanners’ throwing event team scored three places in the shot, discus and javelin as well.
BOYS OUTDOOR TRACK
Peabody boys earn second place: At the same NEC Freshman/Sophomore Meet in Gloucester, the Tanners would up with 123 points, good for second place. Izaih Arce set a new meet record in winning the shot put for Peabody in a throw of 43-5, while Zaiden Nazaire also set a meet record with his fling of 129-11 in the discus. Luke Murphy (2-mile) was also a winner from Peabody, as was the 4×800 relay team of Aiden Trainor, Salmane Lhassouani, Vinnie D’Agostino and Xavier Wheeler. Also running well while placing third were Salamane Lhassouani (2-mile), Nathan Aghedo (800) and Trainor (mile).
Highlanders take sixth place: At the EIL Championships, Pingree was led by Jake Medeiros’ second place distance in the discus (117-3), a third place in the 1500 by Will Coughlin (a school record time of 4:15.18), and Aidan Trachtenberg’s third place throw of 125-7 in the javelin.
Masco shines at Andover Meet: Zander Hamlin took silver in both the 800 meters (1:58.08) and triple jump (40-4 1/2) as the Chieftains fared well at the Andover Boosters Invitational Meet. Tim Lull established a new Masconomet school record by finishing second in the 400 (49.36), while Colin Moran was also second in the 110 hurdles (15.21), as was the 4×400 relay team of Spencer Linonis, Feidler, Nicco Cefalo and Lull (3:33.75). Masconomet’s other medal winners included Cefalo (400), Adam Toleos (javelin), Linonis (long jump) and the 4×100 and 4×100 relays.
In the NEC Freshman/Sophomore Meet, Connor Marshall took first places in both the 100 (11.48) and 200 (23.48) to highlight the afternoon for Masconomet. Harry Lotspeich-Discus, Jonah Steffans (400 hurdles) and the 4x100m team of Grajal, Quinn, Scenna and Marshall all placed third.
BOYS LACROSSE
Marblehead 9, Lexington 6: Junior Tyler Forbes scored four goals, giving him a team-leading 33 on the season, and adding one assist as the Magicians rallied from a 5-3 deficit to prevail. Kyle Thibodeau added three goals while captain Owen Dulac contributed a goal and two assists for Marblehead (now 10-3), with Bailey Finkle also scoring. Reid Wysor, Landon Dosch and Will Kinahan all had one assist, with captain Grady Becker also playing well and goalie Colin Maniaci making five saves.
Manchester Essex 13, Swampscott 9: Junior John von Barta had three goals and two assists, with Johnny Marino and Ollie Braham adding two goals each, as the Big Blue dropped a road battle in Manchester. Tyler Ostroff (2 assists) and Emerson Joy had the other goals for Swampscott (7-8), with Jason Rothwell picking up two assists. Luke Michigan was successful in the faceoff circle, winning 18 draws, and goalkeeper Colton Alex stopped 11 shots.
North Andover 9, Masconomet 3: The Chieftains (7-7) saw their five-game winning streak snapped in a non-league loss.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Beverly 7, Billerica 5: Captain Madeleine Reynolds stopped seven shots and, with a great defensive effort from fellow captains Charlotte Miller and Morgan Linskey as well as Belle Belanger, Nola Redman and Delphine Kwaa in front of her, helped the Panthers improve to 13-1. Madz LeBlanc, another BHS captain, led the offense with three goals and two assists. Freshman Marisa Hutton added a goal and two assists, with single goals credited to Sasha Miller, Annabelle Miller and Meghan Potter.
Bishop Fenwick 11, Marblehead 7: Zoe Dwyer, Maggie Svencer and Sammy Walker each scored twice and Avery Wysor added one goal for Marblehead (6-8). Goalie Molly Bullard finished with seven saves.
Pingree 10, Williston Northampton 5: Goalie Murphy Holden stopped 10 shots in addition to causing two turnovers and scooping a ground ball to keep the Highlanders rolling at 12-1. Caitlin Cunningham (2 GBs) and Ellie Bracken (1 CT) both scored three goals; Shreve Loyd had two; Liv Melei produced a goal and three assists; and Isla Cleveland caused four turnovers and recorded three ground balls for Pingree.
GIRLS TENNIS
Newburyport 5, Marblehead 0: Sophomore Li put up a strong fight at third singles for the Magicians (now 7-4) before falling, 6-4, 6-3.
BASEBALL
Masconomet 7, Lynn English 1: Zach Ward struck out nine in five innings of work and Masconomet (9-6) scored six runs in the first inning to win for the fourth time in its last five outings. Aidan Brown had a key triple while senior captain Cal Weidman provided two hits and Chase Lepore had Masco’s other base knock on the day. Jacob Sofronas also whiffed a pair in two innings of scoreless relief.
Newburyport 4, Essex Tech 3 (8 innings): Liam Waterman had three hits and also struck out nine batters in seven frames but the Hawks (6-9) couldn’t hold a 3-1 lead going to the bottom of the seventh. Jackson Taylor (2-for-4) and Tommy Grant also hit doubles for Essex Tech and Jacoby Casinelli Tarasuik had an RBI.
Bishop Fenwick 10, Lynn Classical 2: Senior captain Timmy Roningen was outstanding in striking out six over six innings as the Crusaders (12-4) won their third straight heading into a Monday clash with rival St. Mary’s. Sophomore Andrew Kiricoples had a big day at the plate with a triple, three hits and three runs scored while Mike Obremski had two hits with two RBI and Noah Hammond and Matt Martisauskas also had two hits apiece.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Arlington 3, Essex Tech 0: The Hawks (now 4-10) fell in straight sets.
SOFTBALL
Peabody 15, Greater Lawrence 7: Sophomore Taylor King hit two home runs, one in the park and one over the fence, and finished with four RBI to propel the Tanners (10-5) on the road. Senior captains JJ Emerson (2 RBI) and Lizzy Bettencourt had two hits each while Olivia Guarino recorded two RBI and Claire Welton also blasted one over the fence. Olivia Palmieri went the distance against a tough Reggie lineup, striking out four in the victory.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Worcester State 13, Salem State 4: The Vikings (21-17) gave up runs in each of the first five innings as their season ended in the MASCAC semifinals. Antonio Belgrove’s two-run singles put SSU on the board in the bottom of the fifth, followed by a Nolan Currier RBI double and a run-scoring single from Lucas Rincon. Salem native Jack Doyle also had a hit and scored a run for the Vikes.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE
Haverford 19, Endicott 9: In the opening round of the NCAA Division 3 tournament, the Gulls (15-5) were bounced by the nation’s 23rd ranked team at Bello Field in Medford. Mia Smith led the Endicott offense with three goals and two assists, with teammate Abbie Belleville coming up with two goals of her own. Leah Black contributed a goal and three assists as well.
