BASEBALL
Gloucester 10, Masconomet 8 (11 innings): Picking up in the ninth from Thursday’s suspended game, the Fishermen saw Nico Alves hold the Chieftains scoreless in the 9th, 10th and 11th Saturday including working around a leadoff double in the 10th. Jaylen Severino’s leadoff single in the 11th led to a two-run rally as Nick Aiello and Giacomo Martel followed with RBI singles and Alves slammed the door in the bottom half.
Rockport 4, Ipswich 1: Ben Sperry went the distance Friday night, holding Ipswich to just two hits and striking out 11 to power the Vikings. Josiah Whitley went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two stolen bases to spark the offense while Brady Murray and Gabe Gallagher both had a hit with an RBI.
Amesbury 3, Manchester Essex 0: The Hornets were limited to just two hits in a rain shortened six-inning game and fell to 6-6 on the season with a road loss against their Cape Ann League rivals.
Gloucester 4, Salem 3: Brayden Francis was dominant on the hill for the Fishermen, throwing a complete game and allowing just one walk and zero earned runs while punching out 11 Witches in a Thursday victory.
Giacomo Martell had a two-run base knock for Gloucester, which saw six different players record one hit. Nolan Aiello hit safely in the bottom of the sixth and came around to score the game-winning.
GIRLS TRACK
Taylor, Castellucci star for Gloucester: At Saturday’s Northeastern Conference Freshman/Sophomore Meet at Newell Stadium, freshman Tess Taylor and sophomore Diana Grace Castellucci both shined for the Fishermen.
Taylor finished in second place in the 100 hurdles with a personal best time of 18.32 seconds; she also claimed third place in the long jump 15 feet 2 1/4 inches). Castellucci also had a PR when she took second place in the 400 meters in 1:05.05, and added a sixth in the long jump at 14 feet 9 1/4 inches. Together along with teammates Violet St. Marie and Grace Olson, they added a second place finish in the 4×100 relay (55.17).
Jocelyn Maddalena added a strong sixth place finish in the triple jump (27-5) for GHS.
BOYS TRACK
Mannone’s third place tops for GHS: Led by a third place time by freshman Vincent Mannone in the 400 meters (55:75, a PR), Gloucester finished with 29 points at the NEC Freshman/Sophomore Meet at home. Fellow freshman Adare Foster added a seventh place showing in the 400 (55.78, also a PR), while both freshman Nathan Stanley (400 hurdles, 1:14.50) and sophomore Joseph Porcello (triple jump, 53 feet) each claimed eighth place.
In addition, the Fishermen’s 4×400 relay team of sophomore Coletta along with Foster, Stanley and Mannone took fourth place (4:13.34), while the 4×800 quartet of 10th graders Matt Ala, James Aloi, Liam Dewan and freshman Isaiah Nicastro took fifth place (10:36.92).
BOYS LACROSSE
Manchester Essex 8, Pentucket 5: Charlie Thurlow, the Hornets’ leading scorer, added to those totals by scoring four times to help his team improve to 8-1. Thurlow leads the club in both goals (24) and total points (32).
Aaron Crompton made a dozen saves in net to pick up his fourth win of the spring for Manchester Essex. Luke Renzi added three goals for the winners and Walker Velo had three assists, with Carson Croft adding a solo goal.
GIRLS TENNIS
Manchester Essex 3, Hamilton-Wenham 2: The Hornets scored a huge win over the three-time defending Division 4 state champions on Thursday, with third singles player Grace Scarbrough battling back to earn a three-set victory (4-6, 7-5, 6-2) at third singles.
Sarah Cort was also a singles winner in the No. 2 spot, taking her match 6-3, 6-2. Nina Zalosh and Maeve McCardle had a battle on their hands before prevailing, 7-6, 7-5.
Hamilton-Wenham 5, Rockport 0: In a Friday match, junior Mariana DeBenedictis turned in a spectacular performance for the Vikings. The National Honor Society member played for 2 1/2 hours against the Generals’ Charlotte Ireland, battling the entire way before dropping a 3-6, 6-2, 5-7 decision.
“Mariana completed changed the momentum when she took the second set,” said Rockport head coach Stacey Twombly. “She was down 2-4 in the third set and never showed signs of not overcoming the early deficit.”
Aili Masson and Gabby Lucido also played well for the Vikings in their own singles matches.
BOYS TENNIS
Hamilton-Wenham 5, Rockport 0: The Vikings fell to 0-9 on the season, playing diligently but ultimately falling on their home courts against one of the strongest programs in Division 4 boys tennis, their Cape Ann League rivals from Hamilton-Wenham.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Gloucester 8, Saugus 5: The Fishermen won their first game of the season with a victory on the turf at Newell Stadium Thursday night.
“The team worked together fantastic. (Goalie) Gabby Martell had some amazing saves,” remarked head coach Lizzie Luster.
“Our defense worked so hard and played very well and aggressive the whole entire game. Plus, the offense worked together got the ball around and got so many shots off.”
Luster went on to say that Sofia Crivello had a terrific game defensively, and that midfielder Skye Berry hustled the entire game.
