Something is brewing on the pitch in Byfield.
The Triton girls soccer team finally broke through earlier in the week against Amesbury, getting into the win column with a 2-1 victory. It was the first of hopefully many for new coach Danielle Perkins, but the Vikings weren’t about to let it be the highlight of their entire week.
Over the weekend, they made it two in a row.
It was senior Ava Herrera sending in a nice cross to the front of the net, and freshman Emelia Shkurti on the receiving end for the lone goal of the game. And thanks to a standout defensive effort in the second half, Triton was able to hold on for the 1-0 win over Pentucket, and secure the program’s first victory over the Panthers since 2021.
“It was an impressive defensive showing,” said Perkins. “Corrina Storrs, Summer Pawlick, Bella Carmody and Maeve Hughes all played well defensively, and Addison Ewell cleaned up the rest with 10 saves.”
Triton (2-4-0) will look to make it three in a row when it hosts Essex Tech on Tuesday.
Bub, Pentucket post another shutout
That’s now three straight games and three straight shutouts for the Pentucket field hockey team. Goalie Hannah Bub was strong in the cage once again, and the Panthers were able to blank Essex Tech on Friday, 2-0.
And this coming after consecutive shutouts of Swampscott and Triton.
Both goals on Friday for the Panthers (5-2-1) came in the second half, with Kayla Murphy scoring off a pass from Ella Palmer, and Katherine Flaherty converting a penalty stroke.
Georgetown splits the weekend
It was a mixed weekend for the Georgetown girls soccer team.
Everything started off well on Thursday, when the Royals hosted Ipswich and took home the win, 3-2. Lexie Sheahan scored a pair of goals for the Royals (her 6th and 7th of the season) while adding an assist, and sophomore Alana Smith netted her first. Leading 2-1 at the time, goalie Talya Mariani (2 saves) booted a punt that Sheahan was able to track down over three defenders, before racing 70 yards to score her second of the game.
So in the box score, Mariani gets an assist.
“Kudos to the team as we were missing four starters due to injury,” said coach Kevin Fair.
But on Saturday, the offense dried up.
Georgetown kept up with a senior-laden Billerica team, but couldn’t find the back of the net in a 1-0 loss. Mariani made seven saves in the setback for the Royals (4-2-1), who hit the crossbar three times in the first half and had the better of the chances in the second. Avery Upite battled Merrimack College commit Kaylie Govoni in the midfield all game, and defender Reese Martin continues to have a fantastic senior season for the Royals.
Oreal, Port golf explode
Everything was dialed in for the Newburyport golf team over the weekend in its massive 176-134 victory over Rockport. Sophomore Jack Oreal was the match medalist with 34 Stableford points, teammate Gavin Goich had 33, and both Austin Yim and Sam Luekens had 28.
Goals all around for the Clippers
It was another ho-hum, dominant effort for the Newburyport girls soccer team over the weekend, crushing Essex Tech, 5-1. The red-hot Clippers (5-0-1) had five different goal-scorers between Alexis Greenblott, Grace Parsons, Aoife Tykulsky, Sevilla Coffin and Natalie DeGraves, and Coffin also had two assists.
Newburyport volleyball goes 1-1
The weekend contained a pair of blowouts for the Newburyport volleyball team.
It started by dishing one out on Thursday, sweeping Georgetown in three sets, 25-18, 25-6, 25-18. Olivia Foley had 9 kills and 3 blocks in the win for the Clippers, while sophomore Ava Bailey added 5 kills.
But the very next day, Newburyport came up against a talented Masconomet squad and lost by the same 3-0 sweep (25-4, 25-19, 25-23). Gabby Vigeant led the Clippers (4-3) in that one with 6 kills, while Nora Geerlings was strong in service with 3 aces.
Vikings and Panthers go scoreless
There was plenty of up-and-down action, but no goals scored between the Triton and Pentucket boys soccer program’s during Thursday’s 0-0 draw. Tim Clark posted the shutout for the Vikings, while Owen Aalto had the clean sheet for the Panthers.
Royals downed by Ipswich
Both Aidan Beqiraj and Bryce Hodges found the back of the net, but it wasn’t quite enough for the Georgetown boys soccer team during Thursday’s 3-2 setback at Ipswich. Zach Pinkham had an assist for the Royals, and goalie Pete Trougakas made 11 saves.
