A year ago, the Central Catholic field hockey team won 16 games and made it to the Division 1 Round of 16, with one of those victories being a 3-0 shutout of Newburyport.
Two facts that Olivia Wilson apparently hasn’t forgotten about.
Because on Friday, the senior was absolutely unstoppable once again, scoring four goals to lead Newburyport to a statement victory over Central Catholic, 5-0. It wraps up a week where Wilson scored twice in a win over Pentucket, five times in a victory over Hamilton-Wenham, and now four more times against the Raiders for an incredible 11 total tallies.
Riley Lombard scored the final goal while Cody Saboliauskas posted the shutout for the Clippers (4-1), who will next host Essex Tech on Wednesday.
Amesbury golf tops Triton
For the first time this decade, the Amesbury golf team has taken down Triton.
The monumental match took place on Thursday, when the Redhawks got 36 quota points from Jack Kusler to earn the 164-155 victory over the Vikings. The sophomore Kusler was 3-under in stroke play through five holes, and was able to finish up an excellent day to help the Redhawks (4-2) wrap up an undefeated 3-0 week. Will Ouellet came up clutch with 29 points from the No. 7 position in the order, and Nick Creps was right behind with 28 points.
For Triton (3-4), Cullen Kohan led the way with 30 points, while the trio of Greg Muse, Evan Allen and Jack Gagne all came in with 26.
Triton girls soccer on the board!
Not only did the Triton girls soccer team earn its first win, but it was also able to complete an undefeated weekend.
And it all started on Thursday, when the Vikings battled through injuries to earn a 3-3 draw against visiting Rockport. Sarah Ewell, Emilia Shkurti and Stef Dono scored the goals, and Maeve Hughes, Lilly Voltero, Ginger Thompson, Neala Hurley and Summer Pawlick all stepped up and played big minutes. The Vikes were already starting backup goalie Fiona Romano, who put together a great first half before also going down with an injury and being replaced by Ewell — who preserved the draw.
But on Saturday, Triton got into the win column.
With Abby Sutherland getting the start in net, the Vikings were able to take down visiting Whittier Tech, 4-1, to earn their first win of the season. Thompson, Shkurti, Dono and Healy scored the goals for the Vikes (1-3-1), who are thankfully “turning a health corner as well,” according to coach Danielle Perkins.
Big non-league win for Newburyport golf
It’s been a perfect start to the year for the Newburyport golf team, and that didn’t change on Thursday when it welcomed in some non-league competition.
With a talented Marblehead team traveling over to Rowley Country Club, the Clippers scored well once again to pull out the 177-167 victory. Gavin Goich had another big day with 34 quota points to lead the Clippers (4-0), while both Sam Luekens and Davis Pons weren’t too far behind with 30 points to round out the top-3.
A weekend split for Georgetown boys soccer
The Georgetown soccer team didn’t let a bad result change its mood the following day.
It wasn’t the greatest showing for the Royals on Thursday, when Wade Turner scored the team’s lone goal in a 5-1 loss to Lynnfield. But on Friday, the Royals put that behind them to regroup and take down Pioneer Charter on the road, 3-2.
Turner assisted on all three goals during the win, which were scored by Zach Pinkham, Donnie Amazon and Nikki Markovic. The Royals (2-3) will look to get back to .500 when they travel to play Essex Tech on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Raby, Newburyport draw Div. 4 runner-up
There have already been a couple early challenges this season for the Newburyport girls soccer team, but none more so than on Thursday afternoon when last year’s Division 4 state runner-up, Hamilton-Wenham, entered James T. Stehlin Field.
The Clippers, though, were able to pass another test.
Chloe Raby was excellent in net for the home team, making a few high-level stops as part of an 8-save day to help clinch an eventual 1-1 draw. The Clippers (2-0-2) — who will next travel to Ipswich on Tuesday — saw senior striker Aoife Tykulsky score their goal off an assist from Grace Parsons.
Lynnfield shuts down hurt Georgetown girls soccer
It’s never good to already be down three starters going into a game against the likes of the Lynnfield girls soccer program.
Then losing two more not even five minutes in is a recipe for disaster.
But that was the situation an already-hobbled Georgetown faced on Thursday, when top midfielder Katie Davies got hurt during warmups and starting defender Noelle Klimas had to exit the game at the five-minute mark. Not to mention the three starters that the Royals were already down, which helped the host Pioneers eventually earn the 3-0 win.
Despite the setback, Cora Robinson still played an excellent game in net for Georgetown (2-3-0), as did defenders Liana Nakatsugawa and Penny Church in front of her. The Royals will try to get back on track, and healthier, in time for when they host Essex Tech on Tuesday (4 p.m.).
