If this keeps up, it’s going to be another terrific season for the Newburyport field hockey team.
So far through three games: The Clippers are averaging 3.3 goals a night.
A number that only increased following Friday afternoon’s doubling-up of Hamilton-Wenham for the 4-2 win. This time it was senior co-captain Blaire Fox having one of her best career games, scoring three goals while assisting on the team’s final tally scored by Myra Taffel. Then also picking up assists for the Clippers (3-0) were Reese Beauparlant and Kendall Martyn.
The Clippers now get a week off before hosting Essex Tech on Friday.
Newburyport volleyball makes major statement
Well, this changes the equation a little bit.
Thursday’s volleyball showdown between Newburyport and Lynnfield was quite anticipated, with both powerhouse CAL programs coming into it undefeated. What more, the Clippers are fresh off a run to the Division 3 quarterfinals last year, while the Pioneers made it to the Final Four in the same playoff bracket.
So you would expect a long, back-and-forth match, right?
Yeah … that’s the opposite of what happened.
Instead, Newburyport made a massive statement to the rest of the league with a 3-0 sweep (25-16, 25-22, 25-21). The Pioneers (3-1) came into it having not lost a set all year, but despite playing a couple of close ones, dropped all three of them on the night. Meanwhile for Newburyport (5-0), it was Gabby Vigeant sending down 16 kills with 2 aces, while Ellie LeDuc added 12 kills.
So just continue to raise expectations for the talented Clippers.
The two programs will meet again in Lynnfield on October, 22nd.
Big win for Amesbury field hockey
The Amesbury field hockey team is on the board.
After a few solid performances and close calls, the Redhawks were finally able to earn their first victory of the season on Friday following a dominant 5-0 win at Everett. A pair of captains in Lucy Nachtygal and Hope Shanahan both scored twice for the Redhawks (1-3), and Kylee Houle found the back of the cage for her first goal of the year. Meanwhile, both Nachtygal and Addy Cooper had assists.
“We are hoping to build on the excitement after getting every player into the game,” said Amesbury coach Jillian Tobin. “Shelby Massey earned her first shutout by commanding the field and directing the defense productively.”
Up next, Amesbury will travel to Triton on Wednesday.
Triton field hockey also on the board!
It all came together for the Triton field hockey team on Friday.
Welcoming in a non-league matchup against Everett, the Vikings put together a rather flawless performance in an 8-0 victory for their first win of the year. Junior goalie Molly Morris posted the shutout, recording 11 saves in the winning effort. Then offensively, it was the duo of Maggie Rennick and Molly Maynard scoring twice, while Aaliyah Jackson, Gracie Muse, Julia LeTourneau and Marin Magee all found the back of the cage as well.
The Vikings (1-3-0) will look to make it two in a row when they welcome in rival Amesbury on Wednesday.
Three in a row for Triton golf
The beat just rolls on for the Triton golf team.
Following the team’s lone loss of the season to rival Newburyport, the Vikings have now ripped off three straight wins after Thursday’s 160-143 road victory at Rockport. It was Jack Gagne leading the effort with 32 quota points, while the duo of Cullen Kohan and Tedy Magee each carded 27.
So far this year, the Vikings (5-1) are averaging 171.0 points per match.
They’ll look to improve that average on Wednesday when they play Methuen.
Depth showing up again for Amesbury golf
Amesbury golf coach Paul Creegan summed it up rather perfectly.
“When you cross off a 24, that’s a great problem to have,” said the longtime leader.
And right now, his Redhawks are flying high.
But it wasn’t just the high-end talent the team possesses this year that showed up on Thursday, but the depth that powered Amesbury to a 172-161 victory over Essex Tech. It was both the third straight win for the surging Redhawks (5-1), as well as the highest score that the team has posted on their home Amesbury Golf Course this season.
And the first score they had to drop: A 24.
The story of the day for Amesbury was that its top-6 scorers all came home with at least 26 quota points. The duo of Lincoln Kime (33) and Jack Kusler (32) finished at the top, while Anderson Bolth (28), Shawn Asselin (27), Gus Headrick (26) and Nick Creps (26) rounded out an excellent day.
The Redhawks now get a week off before a heavyweight matchup at rival Triton on Thursday.
Oreal, Newburyport golf stay perfect
The Newburyport golf team wasn’t about to lose its first match of the year.
Even on the road, the Clippers are always going to show up.
On Thursday, Jack Oreal and the Clippers made the trip over to Myopia Hunt Golf Club, and took down host Hamilton-Wenham for the 160-140 victory. The senior Oreal — our two-time Daily News MVP — led the winning effort with 33 quota points, while Jackson LaCava was right behind with 31 and Tucker Cowles came home with 26.
Newburyport (4-0) will look to stay undefeated at Essex Tech on Monday.
Pentucket volleyball puts together best game yet
We mentioned it the other day, but CAL scheduling didn’t give the Pentucket volleyball team any breaks to start the new season.
Like, at all.
The Panthers had to face the three best teams in the league from a year ago to start off, with a non-league matchup against a strong Masconomet program thrown in the middle. But the benefits of facing that gauntlet so early are starting to show, as the Panthers finished up that stretch on Thursday night with their best game of the year against North Reading.
Senior captains Valerie Ridgley, Emma Burkinshaw, Michael Gabardi, Ellie DeRosa, Devyn Walsh and Genevieve D’Angelo led the team to a fifth set, but the visiting Hornets eventually came away with a 3-2 win.
Triton volleyball gets a set before falling
The Triton volleyball team wasn’t going to come home empty-handed.
Traveling on the road for a non-league matchup Thursday night, the Vikings made sure they picked up a set before eventually losing to host Salem, 3-1 (11-25, 25-23, 13-25, 18-25). Emma D’Andrea had a strong game with 5 kills and a block, while Charlotte Wilson provided 4 service aces and 9 digs.
The Vikings (1-4) will next travel over to rival Pentucket on Tuesday.
