You can see the Amesbury field hockey team getting better with every game.
The Redhawks were able to end the previous week with a five-goal outburst for their first win of the year, then their next time out, they found the back of the cage three more times against rival Triton on Wednesday. Then just 24 hours later, quad-captains Hope Shanahan, Sofia Le, Lucy Nachtygal, Addy Cooper and the Redhawks earned another positive result following a 0-0 draw over at Rockport.
Junior goalie Shelby Massey posted the shutout, and Anna Shoumakis, Liv Jusfredo and Charlotte Kime all had strong games as well. Up next, the Redhawks (1-4-1) will travel to Ipswich on Monday.
Heavyweight golf battle goes to Triton over Amesbury
It was about as marquee of a golf match that you’ll find in our area this year.
Thursday afternoon offered a sneak peak of the upcoming annual “River Rival” tournament on Columbus Day weekend, with one-loss Amesbury making the trip over to Ould Newbury to battle fellow one-loss Triton. Both sides flexed their muscle, but when the dust had settled it was the Vikings coming away with the huge victory over the Redhawks, 166-152.
It was the fifth win in a row for the surging Vikings (7-1), who were led by Wyatt Allen with 30 quota points, Conor Kevin with 29 points and Charlie White with 28 points. Meanwhile for the Redhawks (5-2), Gus Headrick was out in front with 29 points, while Jack Kusler came home with 28 and both Nick Creps and Shawn Asselin had 25.
Dominant performance from Newburyport field hockey
It was a rather stress-free Friday afternoon for Newburyport field hockey.
The Clippers put the pressure on early, and cruised to the finish line to earn the 5-0 shutout victory over visiting Essex Tech. Sophomore forward Myra Taffel found the back of the cage twice, while the trio of Brooke McCarron, Lottie O’Brien and Blaire Fox scored the final goals.
The Clippers (5-0) will look to stay undefeated when they host rival Triton on Monday — weather permitting.
Beat rolls on for Newburyport volleyball
It’s now eight matches up, and eight down for Newburyport volleyball.
These Clippers just continue to roll along, and on Thursday evening they won their sixth straight match by a clean 3-0 sweep — this time over Hamilton-Wenham (25-23, 25-19, 25-17). Each set was better than the last one for the undefeated Clippers (8-0), who were once again led by Gabby Vigeant and her 10 kills and 4 aces.
Vigeant and fellow seniors Ava Bailey, Phoebe Li Eyink, Ellie LeDuc, Amanda Linteris, Lilah Thompson, Ellebe Foster, Sawyer Frosk, Penelope Fuentes, Mia Karopoulos and Brynn Sirota will next play Triton on Tuesday.
Newburyport golf also stays perfect
We’ve mentioned it before this season with the Newburyport golf team.
But when you drop 179 stableford points and it doesn’t increase your season-long average by all that much, you know that you have a great squad. The Clippers had no issues staying undefeated at Rowley Country Club on Thursday afternoon, having three golfers come home with at least 30 quota points to take down visiting Ipswich, 179-153.
Fresh off his 41-point outing his last time out, senior Jack Oreal once again led the way with 36 points. Behind him it was Gavin Goich (34) and Sam Luekens (30) for the Clippers (7-0), who will next travel to Manchester Essex on Tuesday.
Georgetown golf sets new season high
There was still a lot of good golf being played by Georgetown on Thursday.
The Royals went on the road and set a new season-high score — by 15 points — at Reedy Meadow Golf Course. But it wasn’t quite enough to drive home entirely happy, as the Royals fell to host Essex Tech, 198-149. It was Nate Anderton leading the way with 28 points, while captains Robbie Skahan and Gavin O’Brien both came home with 24.
The Royals (0-8) will get a week off before hosting Triton on Wednesday.
Triton volleyball still plays well in setback
You have to bring your A-game to beat the Lynnfield volleyball team.
The Pioneers can hit with the best squads in the CAL, and they showed that on Thursday with a 3-0 match sweep of Triton (25-12, 25-16, 25-12). But despite the final score, Vikings coach Bob Van Etten still said, “The entire team performed well tonight.”
He also made sure to praise Charlotte Wilson, who got down to make 6 digs against a strong hitting team. The Vikings (1-6) will look to end their four-match slide against Gloucester on Monday.
Pentucket golf hangs tough
The Pentucket golf team swung the clubs well on Thursday afternoon, but came up just short in a 147-128 loss to Pentucket. Leading the way for the Panthers (0-8) was Colin Price with 26 quota points, while Brody LeColst was right behind him with 25.
