BOYS HOCKEY
Beverly 10, Lynn 1: Junior wing Jonathan Mezza scored three times and picked up an assist as the Panthers (now 2-1-1) put nearly 60 shots on net in a blowout road win at Connery Rink. Henry Mills, a sophomore, added two tallies and one helper and goaltender PJ Redman, a junior, stopped 12-of-13 shots and picked up an assist in the win.
Other Beverly goals came off the sticks of captain Ethan Haight, Logan Bowen, Coby Malionek, Anthony Barror, and Matthew Rex (first of his varsity career). Mikey O’Leary and Connor Wallace each added two assists, while additional singletons came from captain Bobby Massa, Thomas Simeone, Ryan Everett (his first varsity point) and Nathan Wheeler.
Essex Tech 6, Hanover 0: The Hawks picked up their second straight resounding win after receiving a 16-save shutout from Garrett White plus two goals apiece from Brady Leonard and Ben Rehal (one of which was shorthanded). Logan Casey and Drew Carney each added a goal and an assist for Essex Tech (now 2-2), with Jaydan Vargas earning the team’s ‘Hard Hat’ for a fine performance, which included two assists. Single helpers went to Andrew McKenna, Cam Casey, and Mason Sutcliffe.
St. John’s Prep 3, Bishop Feehan 2: After assisting on each of his team’s first two goals, senior center Cam Umlah’s power play goal with six minutes to go was the game-winner for the Eagles (2-1) in their non-league road victory. Senior captain Johnny Tighe scored the other two goals for St. John’s Prep, which outshot the Shamrocks, 47-6. Defenseman Brady Plaza added two assists in the win, with Mason Luciano plus captains Jake Vana and Christian Rosa also earning helpers.
Swampscott 5, Everett 1: Captain Derek Faia scored twice and added two assists as the Big Blue (3-0-1) remained unbeaten. Will Roddy and defenseman Quinn Hitchcock each had a goal and an assist while Greg Balchenkoff also scored for Swampscott, with Jackson Bartram handing out two assists while Ryan Frary and Ben Tolosa had one each. Goalie Dom Pappalardo stopped 26 shots for the win.
North Andover 6, Masconomet 2: Todd hearing into the final period, the Chieftsins took both a minor and major penalty and allowed four goals while shorthanded, dropping them to 3-2 on the season. Johnny Mireault and Ben Merrill (PPG) had the Masco goals; John Miga, Anthony Cerbone, Alan Weitzman and Mireault had assists. Chris Sacco finished with 25 saves in net while Dylan Brothers had one.
North Reading 7, Peabody-Saugus 0: Playing for the first time in two weeks, the Tanners (1-1) were victimized by five goals against in the second period. Evan Tybinkowski made 20 saves in two periods and Jayden Cunningham stopped nine shots in the third for Peabody-Saugus, which hurt itself by taking 13 penalties.
WRESTLING
St. John’s Prep wins five matches: Nine different Eagle wrestlers won all five of their matches as the team took home blowout victories over Stoughton (81-0), Barnstable (69-3), Middleboro (72-9), Bristol-Rehoboth (76-6) and Marshfield (75-6). Graham Conway (109 lbs.), Ben Schumacher (113), Braedon Goes (120), Bodan Dormer (126), Jimmy Lally 138), Jayden D’Ambrosio (157), Matt Pineiro (165), Marc Pineiro (215) and Alex Bajoras (285) all went a perfect 5-0 on the day for St. John’s Prep, which improved to 10-0 on the season.
Connolly takes 2nd for Fenwick: At the George Bossi Lowell Holidays, Bishop Fenwick senior Luke Connolly placed second out of 70 wrestlers from all over New England in the 157-pound weight class. Teammate Jackson Cody also had a strong tournament, taking eighth place at 120 pounds.
Sicari shines for Beverly: Gino Sicari of Beverly had a strong performance in Lowell by reaching the semifinals of the 190-pound weight class. He ultimately lost a 5-3 decision to Gloucester’s Jaydan Toppan.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Methuen/Tewksbury 2, Beverly 0: Despite 21 saves by senior captain Megan McGinnity, the Panthers (3-2) were felled by a pair of power play goals that came in the first and second periods. Halle Greenleaf, Morgan Linskey and Ashley Freitas also played well for Beverly.
Bishop Fenwick 2, Hopkinton 1: The Crusaders grabbed their first goals, and win, of the 2023-24 season and first career win for head coach Kylie Currier.
