BOYS HOCKEY
Marblehead 4, Winthrop 1: The Headers (8-8) scored the upset of the NEC boys hockey season by going into Winthrop and knocking off the unbeaten hosts. Goaltender Leo Burdge finished with 26 saves for Marblehead, which has won six in a row and eight of its last 10 contests. James Caeran led the offense with two goals, with Avin Rodovsky and Crew Monaco also scoring. Assists went to Kyle Hart (2), Toby Grenier, Caeran and Rodovsky.
Danvers 11, Everett/Revere 3: Defenseman Ty Langlais scored a hat trick and Liam Brooks added two goals and one assist as the Falcons (8-5-2) rolled at home. Sophomore forward Jason Luti added his first career goal and assist in the victory, which also saw Josh Henry and Mikey DeLisio pick up a goal and two assists apiece. Josh Langlais and Cooper Dunham both had a goal and an assist; Seamus Cary had a solo goal, and Steven Vramis, Colby Medeiros, Evan Petroccione (first varsity point) and Nick Robinson one assist each. Brayden Oteri made 10 saves to earn the win in net.
Essex Tech 3, Triton 2: Junior wing Jaydan Vargas netted all three goals for his team and goaltender Garrett White made 19 saves as the Hawks (8-6-1) took home a road win. The third line of Dom Tiberii, Michael Cann, and Brian DeLisio all played well for Essex Tech, which got two assists each from Brady Leonard and Chris Maher as well as singletons from Mason Sutcliffe and Teddy Tsoutsouris.
Arlington Catholic 3, St. John’s Prep 1: The Eagles (12-3) suffered their second straight loss despite outshooting their hosts, 45-14. Sophomore Cooper Hosmer had the lone goal for St. John’s Prep, which never led and allowed an empty net goal to seal its fate. Cam Umlah and Caleb White had assists for the Eagles, with goalie AJ Farese finishing with a dozen saves.
Archbishop Williams 10, Bishop Fenwick 0: Six first period goals by the powerful hosts sunk Fenwick (2-13-1) in a Catholic Central League setback. Goaltender Evan Morey, a sophomore, saw his first varsity action for Fenwick, playing the final six minutes.
Kents Hill 6, Pingree 3: Max Trudel, Quinn Moses and Cam Anderson had the goals for Pingree (10-9-3), with goalie Nick Hubbard stopping 34 of 39 shots. Assists went to Sean Foster, Nick Moulison, Ryan Kavanagh and Marco Mottola.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Beverly 5, Marblehead 0: Sophomore Victoria Willington made her first varsity start and stopped all nine shots that went her way to earn her first win and shutout in a great outing at Salem State for the Panthers (8-5-1). Senior captain Halle Greenleaf had two goals and an assist to power Beverly, Clara Cary netted one and defenseman Morgan Linskey scored a pair as well.
For Marblehead, freshman Scarlet Lee made 34 saves in net and 8th grader Melanie Earl had a standout game on the blue line.
Peabody 6, Shawsheen 3: Senior captain Catie Kampersal scored a pair of goals and fellow senior captain Yasmine Giacalone also scored in the first period as the Tanners (12-1) shot out to a 4-0 lead on Senior Night and extended their win streak to 10. Junior Ava Buckley had a goal with two assists while Shirley Whitmore and Vanessa Steinmeyer also scored. Single assists went to Leah Buckley, Abby McInerney and Mia Lava.
Pingree 2, Kents Hill 1: The Highlanders (7-12) held off Kents Hill for their second win in 24 hours behind goals from sophomore Alexa Blaeser and senior Lucia LaFauci. Neely Payne had a pair of assists, Aby Amigo and Avery Fredo had standout games and Erin Larson had one helper. Freshman Piper Davekos had another great game in net.
Pope Francis 5, Marblehead 0: Playing for the second time in less than 20 hours, the Lady Headers (2-12-1) were blanked by the No. 8 ranked team in D1. Freshman goaltender Scarlet Lee made 34 more saves while sophomore Maddie Graber blocked a lot of shots from her forward spot and Reece Fabrizio played well on defense.
SWIMMING
Fenwick girls take third place: Junior captain Hannah Ryan won the 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, and teamed up with sophomore Caroline Blatchford, freshman Amelia Gallant and senior captain Madi Moseley to win the 400 free relay (4:02.79) and take second in the medley relay (2:00.48) as the Fenwick girls placed third overall (286 points) at the Cara Linehan Buckwell Memorial Swimming and Diving Championships at UMass Dartmouth, named in honor of their late head coach.
Freshman Sarah Shann won the diving event (234.10 points) for the Crusaders as well. Blatchford added second place finishes in both the 200 free (2:01.41) and 100 backstroke (1:03.52), as did Gallant in the 100 butterfly (1:03.38) and 500 free (5:19.12). Moseley snagged a second place showing in the 200 IM (2:40.26) and a sixth in the 100 breast (1:22.29), while the 200 free relay team of Meg Donnelly, Addie Race, Kaleigh Cooke and Shann placed fifth (2:19.23). Fenwick’s lone male representative at the meet, Matt McDonalnd, took sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.89).
WRESTLING
St. John’s Prep wins Division 1 duals: The unbeaten Eagles (33-0) captured their sixth Dual Meet state title in convincing fashion by blasting Franklin at home, 67-8. Winners for St. John’s Prep were Graham Conway (106 lbs.), Ben Schumacher (113), Braedon Goes (120), Boden Dormer (126), Jimmy Lally (138), Will LaVallee (144), Ryan DeSouza (150), Jayden D’Ambrosio (157), Vincent Bilotti (175), Rani Haddad (190), Marc Pineiro (215) and Alex Bajoras (285).
Beverly goes 2-1: The Panthers got three wins apiece from Cooper Lang (113 lbs.), Tristan Gold (144), Bradan McNeil (190) and Jack Consedine (215) while defeating North Attleboro, 57-21 and West Springfield, 40-30, while falling to Central Catholic, 39-27. Jason Knapp (165) had two pins for Beverly, as did Joe Baker at both 165 and 175.
Northeast/Fenwick goes 3-0: The Crusaders finished their dual meet season at 12-8, the best mark in the program’s three-year history, after defeating Burlington (54-9), Westfield (60-15) and Waltham (51-30) in a quad meet. Taking home victories were Charlie Berry, Eric Esmurria, Jackson Cody, Michael Hernandez, Nick Valley, Mateo Nunez, Ray Kochanski, Drew Leblanc, Luke Connolly, Seamus Quinn, Tyler Connolly, Ernie Landry, and Raymond Anderson.
Marblehead/Swampscott wins one: At the Travis Yell Memorial Dual Meet tournament, the Black-and-Blue topped Essex Tech/Masconomet (51-30) but fell to Whittier (52-27), Lowell (64-18) and Winchester (45-33). Captain Liam O’Brien won three matches on the day, captain Mason Hinshaw picked up four victories. Phineas Jakious, Justin Gonzalez, Colin Hart, Jayvery Monegro, Ben O’Brien and Angelo Knight all picked up pinfall wins throughout the day.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Pingree 46, Phillips Exeter 32: Bella Vaz scored 21 points while Shauna O’Brien added nine to lead the Highlanders to victory. Kiki Gable and Lyla Campbell both contributed six points for Pingree (now 11-7).
Wachusett 62, Bishop Fenwick 43: In a physical, defensive game on the road, No. 2 (in D1) and unbeaten Wachusett opened up a one-point halftime lead in the third and fourth stanzas. Senior Isabella Lopez-Marin played well with 13 points while senior captain Cecilia Kay scored 11 points with 10 rebounds. The Crusaders are now 12-3 with all three losses coming to the No. 1 and 2 teams in Division 1.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Catholic Memorial 77, St. John’s Prep 43: The Eagles led after one quarter, 13-8, Friday night before being outscored by 15 points in the second quarter and were never able to claw their way back in. Eleven different players had points for St. John’s Prep (5-11), with Jeremiah Polanco and Ben Krysiak each scoring six.
Pingree 89, Marianapolis Prep 61: Ray Cuevas had a monster game for Pingree with 30 points while Charlie Lynch scored 21 and Jack Murphy contributed 17.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Endicott 89, Hartford 61: Sarah Dempsey finished with 21 points, six rebounds, five assists, two blocked shots and two steals as four of the Gulls’ five starters reached double figures in a blowout win. Libby Fleming also had a big game with 18 points and 11 rebounds, as did Emma Shinney with 16 points, nine assists and six steals. Cora Nadeau added 13 points for Endicott (now 12-8).
Framingham State 75, Salem State 56: A monster 24-point, 18-round performance from Ernidia Goncales couldn’t prevent the Vikings from falling to 9-12 on the season. Kylie Gates added 12 points for SSU and, like Goncalves, blocked three shots.
Roger Williams 70, Gordon 63: The Scots (4-17) got 25 points from Ami Rivera, including four 3-pointers, plus a team-high seven rebounds and three steals.
MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Salem State 85, Framingham State 75: Jaden Castillo produced a game-high 26 points while teammate LJ Hicks had 21 points and five assists to give the Vikings (11-9) a home victory. Michael Makiej (13 points, 7 rebounds), Liam Byrne (12 points, 14 rebounds) and Will Martinez (11 points) were also instrumental in the SSU victory.
Endicott 70, Hartford 61: Jeff Hill finished with 14 points, Jalen Echevarria with 13, and the Gulls got nearly half of their points off the bench while improving to 13-8. Coming off the pine to produce offensively were Max Grenert (10), Matt Boen (9) and Drew Brown (8).
Roger Williams 81, Gordon 74: Justin Yu scored 17 points and Treyton Tebbs added 14, but it wasn’t enough for the Scots (now 5-16) to overcome a seven-point halftime deficit. Isaac Jarvis (12), Bryce Smith (11), and Sean Quanico (10) were also in double figures for the hosts.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE HOCKEY
Vermont State Castleton 3, Salem State 0: Kaia Hollingsworth was busy in net while making 40 saves for the Vikings (now 5-16-2).
MEN’S COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL
Vassar 3, Endicott 0: The No. 6 ranked team in the nation in Division 3 swept the Gulls (4-4) at the Hall of Fame Invitational in Springfield. Playing well for Endicott were Aidan Iacovelli (11 kills), Dean Warner (10 kills) and Gavin Emenaker (28 assists).
MEN’S COLLEGE HOCKEY
Endicott 3, Western New England 3: The Gulls (13-4-5) did win the shootout for an extra point in the CCC standings but had to settle for a tie for NCAA purposes. Ryan Wilson made 29 saves and Collin Kleiser, Jimmy McIsaac and Zach Mazur lit the lamp.
Salem State 2, Framingham State 2: Carson Whitman gave the Vikings (6-14-1) a third period lead but the Rams tied it up with just under five minutes to go and neither team found a winner in overtime. Ryan Meagher also scored for SSU and Hunter Thomas stopped 49 of 51 shots including a perfect 5-for-5 in OT.
