GIRLS HOCKEY
Gloucester 1, Peabody 0: The Fishermen continued to trend in the right direction, winning their third straight game and fourth in their last five. Senior captain and goaltender Kaydin Cusumano led the charge defensively, securing her second straight shutout in net, while fellow senior captain Elliana Parsons had the lone goal of the game on a feed from Emma Krawczyk.
“Kaydin Cusumano with some serious magic between the pipes,” said GHS coach Robert Parsons.
Gloucester takes on Newburyport next at home on Wednesday afternoon (4 p.m.). The Fishermen topped the Clippers, 6-1, earlier this season.
BOYS HOCKEY
North Reading 4, Rockport 2: The Vikings fell for the third straight game to dip to 4-12 on the year. They take on Pentucket at home on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
INDOOR TRACK
Gloucester strong at Qualifier meet: Numerous GHS athletes competed at the MSTCA Last Chance (Qualifier) Meet at Reggie Lewis over the weekend, and a handful improved on their times.
The boys sprint medley relay (SMR) of Jaylen Severino, Leo Cosentino, Seamus Linehan and Jeferson Do Carmo qualified for nationals with a season best time of 3:41.78 while the girls SMR team of Carla Kasera, Grace Castellucci, Madison Jewell and Hope Castellucci (4:31.49) just missed out on the same opportunity. In addition, Callie Arsenault improved both her 300 (46.54 seconds) and 600 (1:50.95) times heading into states next weekend. Brendan Smith also improved his 600 time to 1:33.77) while Jonas Coletta improved his mile time with a PR of 5:04.27.
Manchester Essex, meanwhile, sent athletes on both the boys and girls side to the meet. For the girls, Caroline Eliassen set a PR in the 300 to improve her time to 45.77, while Anna Sergi set another PR to improve her time in the 2-mile (12:52.85).
WRESTLING
Gloucester 2nd at Sarkis Cup: Competing in the second annual Sarkis Cup, the Fishermen claimed second place overall with wins over Winchester (52-27) and Excel Academy (47-27). Their only loss came to Greater Lawrence (56-29), but the strong performance was still good enough for runner-up out of seven competing teams.
Joe Amero, Aiden DeCoste and Max Thomas all finished the day unbeaten at 3-0 to lead the charge. Jayden Chadwick, Chase Ramos and Zach Hashley all had strong days as well with two wins apiece while Titus Love, Cam Russell, Anthony Murawski, Jake Gucciardi, Tyley Hopping and Tito Olubanjo each added one victory.
Next up, the Fishermen face Salem at home for Senior Night on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
ALPINE SKIING
Manchester Essex 80, Newburyport 55: The Hornets boys team wrapped up their North Shore Ski League season at 6-5 with a sound victory over the Clippers in giant slalom. Senior Liam Cummings took first place among 45 competitors, finishing with a top time of 21.68 seconds. Freshman Quinn McLain followed closely in second (21.77) while 8th-grader Vaughn Creeden was seventh in 23.12 seconds. Rounding out the scoring for the Hornets was Nolan Cummings (7th), Sebastian Koch (8th), Rhys Kiester (9th) and Hennix Ogren (10th).
For the Manchester Essex girls, Gracelyn O’Neill and Stella Lage continued their strong seasons with top finishes. Coach Jerry Murphy credited the success of the team to a collective effort and the support of assistant coach Tom Landry.
“This is a team sport and I’m proud of them,” said Murphy. “The team includes only one senior, which means it has a bright future.”
Cummings and McLain will each move on to compete in the state tournament on Feb. 24 at Berkshire East in Western Mass.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Manchester Essex 64, Georgetown 53: The Hornets (9-7) stayed hot, winning their sixth straight game on Friday night against their rivals. Lily Oliver led the charge with 19 points including three triples while Penelope Riggs stepped up big with 15 points and three threes. Anna Gardner added 10 points with two 3-balls and both Harper Brooks (9 points) and Hadley Johnson (7 points) contributed offensively as well. As a team, Manchester knocked down 11 shots from distance. Head coach Lauren DuBois and her group will look to keep the ball rolling on Monday at Lynnfield, a team they beat by eight points less than two weeks ago.
Lynn Tech 49, Rockport 28: The Vikings (11-7) struggled to get much going offensively, ultimately falling to a strong Lynn Tech team that’s now won five straight games. Rockport plays at Mystic Valley on Monday evening (5:30 p.m.) before wrapping up the regular season on Wednesday at home against Greater Lowell Tech.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Amesbury 73, Rockport 40: The Vikings (3-15) couldn’t keep pace with their CAL rivals at home, falling for the ninth straight game. Their next chance to get back into the win column comes on Monday at home against Ipswich (5:30 p.m.).
