GIRLS TRACK
Masconomet’s Siewko wins pentathlon: Mara Siewko from Masconomet Regional took the Mass. State Track Coaches Association’s girls pentathlon title with 3,363 points at the Reggie Lewis Center, using a seventh place finish in the fifth and final event to vault into the top spot in the standings. Siewko set a meet record in the long jump and won it at 18-feet-10 1/2 inches. She was fourth in the high jump (4-11 3/4) and the hurdles (8.9) while picking up seventh in the shot put and running seventh in the 800 (2:32) in that crucial last event.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Leominster 45, Masconomet 42: In the Division 2 preliminary round, the Chieftains held the hosts to just seven fourth quarter points to get back in it but couldn’t quite pull off the upset. Zoe Cote was Masconomet’s leading scorer with 12 points while Shaye Vella scored 10 and grabbed seven of the squad’s 54 total rebounds. Sami Lalikos was a force on the boards as well with 14 to go with her six points plus an incredible eight steals. The Chieftains finish their season at 11-10.
Tantasqua 37, Swampscott 33: Sophomore Anna Kanders scored 12 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter as the Big Blue made a late push in the D3 preliminary round but the visitors made their free throws in the last minute to keep their distance. Swampscott finished up the season at 12-9 and seniors Sam Ward and Maddie Lilley played well in their last home contest.
Pingree 57, Berwick 43: Behind 23 points, five rebounds and three steals by Shauna O’Brien, the Highlanders clinched the EIL regular season title. Sara Graves added 11 points, five assists, three rebounds and a pair of swipes while Rayana Laurent scored 10 with six boards and four times. Evie Roman chipped in seven and controlled the glass with 12 rebounds and Antonella Najim scored six.
BOYS HOCKEY
Pingree 5, North Yarmouth Academy 1: Minus three of their top players due to the flu, the Highlanders put forth a gritty effort to prevail in this Holt Conference playoff quarterfinal. Max Levine-Stein stopped 18-of-19 shots to earn his 10th victory of the season for Pingree (now 14-8-5). Junior center Sean Foster scored his ninth and 10th goals of the season, with Wyatt Langway, Christian Marsh and Chris D’Alleva also ripping the twine.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Salem State 64, Worcester State 61: Yamilette Guerrero scored 28 points and made a runner with 3:28 to go that put Salem State on top for good in the MASCAC quarterfinals. Ernidia Goncalves provided a double double with 12 points and 11 rebounds as the Vikings advanced to the conference semifinals and Shakera Fullenwilder chipped in eight off the bench.
MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
MCLA 76, Salem State 73: After Tyrese Rho’s layup tied the game with 23 seconds left, the Vikings lost this MASCAC playoff game on a buzzer-beating three pointer by MCLA. Ali Barry led Salem State in scoring with 16 points, Jamel Walker scored 14, Rho totaled 12 and Raheim Orleans scored 10 in a balanced showing.
