BOYS BASKETBALL
Salem 73, Wakefield 35: The once-beaten Witches saw Elian Rodriguez provide a sublime effort with 35 points, two steals and a highlight dunk. Nate Lane (10 points) also threw one down, as did Sean Murphy. Cleto Deng provided eight points and eight rebounds and nine players scored in the well-balanced Salem win.
Swampscott 71, Winthrop 29: Teddy O’Neill exploded for 27 points with six assists and sharpshooting Mike Lutko scored 20 as the Big Blue (12-1) tuned up for its next two game against a top ten opponent (Lynn Classical). Connor Chiarello had a staggering eight steals with 13 points and Sam Moscoso scored seven with eight rebounds.
Pingree 60, Bancroft 56: Jordan Maxson scored 29 points to give the Highlanders their fourth straight victory. Sammy Welsh added 14 points and eight rebounds while Joey Pimental Hernandez gave Pingree a big boost off the bench with nine points, including a clutch three-pointer in the late stages of the contest.
Ipswich 68, Whittier 51: Trevor Manning led the Tigers (7-6) with 14 points and head coach Alan Laroche earned his 100th victory at the helm. Anderson Pillis also played well for Ipswich, scoring 11.
Essex Tech 74, Minuteman 58: Senior Antonio Ceruolo stayed hot with 26 points and the Hawks (7-4) won their fourth in a row. Junior Jack Hanchett added 19 points and freshman Joaquim Chiles excelled with 11.
BOYS HOCKEY
Marblehead 2, Gloucester 1 (OT): Captain Hayden Gallo followed up a shot by Max King and deposited the rebound into the Fishermen’s net just 29 seconds into overtime as the Headers (3-8-1) won their third consecutive one-goal game. Junior defenseman Jimmy Ryan added his first varsity goal for Marblehead, a shorthanded strike in the second period off a Kellan Laramie (2 assists) feed. Goaltender Bowden Laramie had his best game of the season in net, stopping 23 Gloucester shots.
Winthrop 3, Peabody/Saugus/Swampscott 1: Jake Kelly scored off a rebound and goalie Dom Pappalardo stopped 30 shots for the Tanners (4-7-1), who were in a one-goal contest until there was just a minute to play.
Worcester Academy 3, Pingree 2: For just the second time this season, the Highlanders (now 8-6-3) dropped back-to-back games with a Holt Conference setback in Worcester. Captain Danny Patch and Will Sheehan had the Pingree goals, with captain Von Larson stopping 26 shots in net.
Arlington Catholic 7, Bishop Fenwick 1: A total of 44 saves by goalie Alex Anticevic weren’t enough to slow down the powerful Cougars on their home ice. Chris Ferlito had the Fenwick (6-8) snipe, assisted by Cam Garcia and captain John Tavernese.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Swampscott 51, Winthrop 37: Monster defense by Sam Ward and Cecilia Tripp helped the Big Blue (9-4) hold Winthrop to nine second half points in a come-from-behind win. Anna Kanders scored 25 with five assists as Swampscott made it four wins in a row. Ward scored nine and Lila Giard grabbed eight rebounds while scoring four.
Danvers 46, Revere 25: The Falcons (12-1) used an early barrage of 3’s to take control and never relented. Captain Kayda Brown led the way with 16 points and six rebounds while Angie Djoko scored nine with six steals, Stella Shairs scored seven, Kyla Moroney chipped in five and Annabel Boyd, Avery Baril, Sienna Lynch and Sienna Goldberg all played well.
Pingree 40, Winsor 27: Freshman Rayana Laurent scored a game-high 17 points to go with six rebounds and three assists to spark the Highlanders to a road win. Sara Graves added 11 points and four assists while Shauna O’Brien added six points and three assists.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Pingree 2, Newton Country Day 1: Allie Simons scored her first goal and Pingree got a gritty effort to earn its first win of the calendar year. Olivia Polles netted the game-winner for the Highlanders, assisted by Olivia Baldassare.
Beverly 6, Medford 0: Senior Meredith Johnston scored a natural hat trick in the first period and Beverly (11-3) cruised. Asuka Keough added a goal and two assists, Ashley Freitas scored with one assist, Avery LeBlanc had three helpers, Aubrey Kelleher had her first goal and Avery Mason posted her second straight shutout.
Winthrop 2, Peabody 1: The Tanners (4-8-1) couldn’t tie it up on a late power play chance in a typical low-scoring, hard-fought rivalry battle.
GIRLS SKIING
Masconomet wins two: Emily Stearns got down the hill in 22.98 seconds and Hannah Mitchell wasn’t far behind in 23.03 to help Masconomet beat Haverhill (75-60) and Andover (72.5-62.5) at Bradford. Erin Daly, Violet Malinowski and Zoe Chen also delivered strong runs for the Chieftains.
Hamilton-Wenham 73, North Andover 62: Maren McCaughey (22.6 seconds) and Evie Bernard (23.10) were outstanding in leading the Generals to victory. Molly Ryan and Samantha Bielek rounded out the top four for H-W.
BOYS TRACK
Masconomet 58, Gloucester 28: The Chieftains got victories from Colin Moran (hurdles), Nathan Laubner (dash), Tim Lull (300), Duncan Cullinane (600), Conall Strangman (1000) and Owen Walsh (mile) to top the Fishermen.
GIRLS TRACK
Peabody 56, Beverly 30: Ayanna Cirame led a sweep of the high jump that helped the unbeaten Tanners get by their rivals. Also winning events were Lily Murphy (2-mile), Kayley Bunn (hurdles), Maya Sutton (300), Avery Marcu (600), Lauren Foley (1000), Ella Braz (mile) and Maddy Holleran (shot put).
The Panthers saw Jaydin Simpson won the dash with solid second play efforts by Grace Williams (1000), Mackenzie Pouliot (600), Jane Healey (2-mile) and Katty Knapiewski.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Salem State 94, MCLA 43: Rockport’s Kylie Schrock had 22 points, nine rebounds and five steals to lead five Vikings in double figures in the home rout. Ernidia Goncalves (13 rebounds) and Lamie Ashley also scored 14 points each for Salem, which led by 26 by halftime.
Roger Williams 71, Gordon 43: Leah McGarvey had a game-high 21 points for the Fighting Scots (4-15) but no one else hit double figures in the conference loss.
Endicott 73, Wentworth 32: The rout was on early for the Gulls (11-7) after a 21-5 first quarter. Aleah Bracey led the balanced offense with 13 points while Mia Gentile scored 12 and Emma Shinney and Avery Brown notched ten each.
MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Endicott 79, Wentworth 76: Ranked No. 15 nationally, the Gulls (17-1) survived their biggest CNE test yet as Marcus Montagino scored 34 points and sparked a 12-8 run over the last 6:46 in a come-from-behind win. Jeff Hill added 10 points and Matt Boen scored seven while handing out six assists.
Salem State 86, MCLA 54: Raheim Orleans busted out for 20 points and the Vikings cruised. A total of 12 players scored at least a basked for Salem State with Mike Makiej (12 points) and Jamel Walker (11) in double figures.
Roger Williams 87, Gordon 77: Despite having five score in double figures the Scots (6-13) couldn’t keep pace. Alex Daniel had a team-high of 16 for Gordon and Ryan Brooks had a huge double-double with 13 points and 17 boards.
