BOYS TRACK
Masconomet 47, Beverly 39: In a meet that came down to the 4×400 relay, the visiting Chieftains prevailed in a time of 3:57.4 as Jack Duvall, Spencer Linonis, Nicco Cefalo and Tim Lull combined to pick up one final victory for their team. Masconomet also got wins from Ryan Lamprey (shot put, 39-4/12), Duvall (300, 40.8), Lull (600, 1:32.2) and Owen Walsh (2-mile, 11:05.2) while also earning some valuable second and third place points.
Charlie Bossler took top honors in the 1000 for Beverly in 2:51.7 while finishing second in the dash (5.9). Charles Salerno and Charlie Silva both qualified for the Division 2 state meet after jumping 5-8. In addition, Panthers Floyd White took the dash in 5.8 seconds, Myles Gregory the hurdles in 7.1, and Jason Provost won the mile in 4:52.4.
Salem, which also took part in the tri-meet, got a second place showing from Brooks Workman in the 2-mile (11:11.5), plus strong showings from Andrew Nunes (44 hurdles), Oscar Fernandez (300) and Alvin Laurent (1000).
Manchester Essex 59, Ipswich 41: Ange Tshibambe broke the school record in the hurdles with a time of 7.98 and also won the 300 in a highlight effort for the Tigers. Joe Wertz also won the 600 and Luke Wile took first in the shot.
GIRLS TRACK
Masconomet 49, Beverly 37: The victorious Chieftains got a pair of first place finishes from Mara Siewko in the high jump (4-10) and 55 hurdles (8.2) to get the better of both Salem and host Beverly. In addition, Savannah Stevens finished first in the 1000 (3:22), Madison Gibeau-Schmitt took top honors in the 2-mile (12:24), and the 4×400 relay also prevailed (4:32).
The Panthers (now 2-2) got victories from Lidia Miedema (shot put, 29-2 3/4), Jaydin Simpson (50 dash, 6.4), Katty Kwapniewski (300, 46.6), Grace Williams (600, 1:50.4), and Chloe Bossler (mile, 6:30.8).
Ipswich 55, Manchester Essex 45: Double winner Kameya Perron (high jump, long jump, plus second in hurdles) sparked the Tigers (2-0). Alana Novello was first in the hurdles while Una Whyte took the 300, Bree Doucet won the shot put and the 4×400 relay picked up a key win.
BOYS HOCKEY
Danvers 5, Winthrop 1: Three first period goals, 21 saves from goalie Evan Morey and a terrific showing by Connor Dembowski (goal, assist) enabled the Falcons (3-4-1) to pick up their best win of the season by knocking off the defending conference champions. Cooper Dunham had two goals and an assist; Owen Swanton and defenseman Aiden Hockney also had goals; and captains Drew Godfried and Thomas Fish both added one assist.
Pingree 5, Holderness 4: In their first game back from holiday break, the Highlanders (now 5-3-2) secured a huge road win against a Top 10 team that came in with a 7-1 record as freshman Drew Gallucci scored a hat trick and sophomore goalie Max Levine-Stein made 35 saves.
Beverly 5, Marblehead 3: Captain Logan Bowen had two goals and an assist, giving him 100 career points, as the Panthers climbed to 4-2-1 on the season. Colby Kaczynski scored his first career goal in the victory, with seniors Colby Malionek and Drew Murphy also lighting the lamp. Goalie Tyler Chin-Aleong finished with 25 saves. Ryan Barror, Zander Alexeyev, Kaczynski and Malionek each had one assist as well.
Bowden Laramie stopped 30 shots in net for the Headers (0-8), with Ryan Angilly, Drew DePhillips and Kellan Laramie picking up the goals. Assists went to Will DePhillips, Holden Ferreria, Teddy Dulac, Angilly and Drew DePhillips.
Essex Tech 5, Pentucket 1: The Hawks (6-2-1) raced out to an early lead on home ice and never looked back. Freshman Braydon Connors scored twice while defenseman Liam Waterman also scored and picked up two assists. Jake Swencki and Liam Foti both lit the lamp once, with Cam Casey (2), Chase Ruberti, Ryan Wilson and Joe Dresser each adding assists.
St. John’s Shrewsbury 5, St. John’s Prep 1: Chase Brown scored an early shorthanded goal to give the visiting Eagles a quick lead in Marlboro, but it was all downhill from there as they dropped their first game of the season. Goalie Jesse Bernardinelli had a season high 37 saves for St. John’s Prep (now 4-1-2).
GIRLS HOCKEY
Masconomet 5, Newburyport 4 (OT): Kayleigh LeColst’s unassisted goal 14 seconds into overtime lifted the Chieftains to their first win of the year, and first for head coach Pete DiNardo behind the bench. Bella Malloy’s second goal of the night, also unassisted, tied it up with 5:42 left in the third while Madie Dupuis and Elizabeth Shoemaker also scored in back-and-forth affair. LeColts finished with a goal plus two assists.
Peabody 2, Winthrop 2 (OT): The Tanners (2-4-1) earned a hard-fought road point with a gritty defensive effort and another stellar showing in net from Sophia Downing.
Beverly 4, Medford 2: Sophomore Avery LeBlanc’s shorthanded goal in the second period proved to be the game-winner to keep the Panthers (now 6-1) rolling. Meredith Johnston had a goal and an assist for the winners, with Zoie Abell and Megan Ryan also lighting the lamp. Asuka Keough dished out two assists while Grace Corbett, captains Morgan Linskey and Ashley Freitas, and LeBlanc all had single helpers.
WRESTLING
Beverly 49, Salem 30: In a clash of arch rivals, the host Panthers prevailed thanks to eight victories, six of those coming via pin. Senior captain Brayden Pouliot remained unbeaten on the season, winning his bout at 113 pounds. Others who claimed victory for BHS included freshman Ethan Skaza (106 lbs.), junior captain Carter Lang (150), junior Enzo Gois (decision at 165), junior captain Tyler Pinto (175), junior Charlie Frost (major decision at 190), senior Kasey Nako (215) and junior captain Joao Reis (heavyweight).
Gloucester 48, Danvers 34: In a home dual meet against their Northeastern Conference rivals, the Falcons got wins from Jack Moreschi, Joey Moreschi, Cam Stewart, Logan Jacques, and Dylan Kinney.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Masconomet 56, North Andover 41: Jimmy Farrell scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds while teammate Jamason Vella had a double-double with 14 points and 11 caroms as the Chieftains won for the fourth time in as many games this season.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Phillips Exeter 36, Pingree 35: The Highlanders were shaded by a single point despite strong games from both Shauna O’Brien, who had 19 points (with 4 three-pointers) and four assists; and freshman Rayana Laurent, who buried two threes for 12 total points, plus six rebounds and three assists.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Salem State 71, Anna Maria 67: The Vikings snapped a five-game losing streak as Ernidia Goncalves scored 16 points and pulled down 14 rebounds (10 on the defensive glass) in a home victory. Destiny Alce came off the bench to add 10 points for Salem State (now 5-7) while Yamilette Guerrero had seven rebounds and four blocked shots in addition to scoring a half-dozen points.
MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Salem State 87, Anna Maria 47: Tyrese Rho scored a team-best 14 points coming off the bench and four of five starters finished in double figures as the Vikings (8-4 overall) won their MASCAC opener in a laugher. Raheim Orleans (9 rebounds) and Ali Barry both scored 11, Jamel Walker and Wil Martinez contributed 10 points each, and Juan Beltres Diaz grabbed 10 boards for the winners.
