BASEBALL
Masconomet 2, Gloucester 0: Senior captain Drew Gustafson struck out a season high 13 and gave up two hits over 6 2/3 before reaching the pitch count limit and also knocked in a run as the Chieftains (6-5) knocked Gloucester from the unbeaten ranks. Fellow captain Cal Weidman drove home a run as well after Nolan Zamagni doubled. Jacob Safronos got the last out and Chase Lepore also doubled.
Swampscott 7, Danvers 6 (8 innings): Senior righty Jami Ford threw all eight frames and struck out nine as the Big Blue (7-3) walked off when Paul Calsimitto (pinch running for Michael Collins after a single) scored on an error. Chase Groothuis drove in two runs for Swampscott and Collins was greta defensively, throwing out two basestealers and Caden Ross added a double and scored.
Danvers (5-6), which dropped its third straight extra inning game, tied it in the seventh when Jack Curcuru blasted a home run, his third hit of the day. Jason Walters also pitched out of trouble several times for the Falcons.
Bishop Fenwick 3, Archbishop Williams 2: Henry Van Faasen struck out eight over 6 1/3 IP and knocked home two runs to push the Crusaders (8-3) to their third straight win. Chris Sawyer came on for a 2-out save while Andrew Kiricoples hit a double. Senior captain Odin Garron and Matt Martisauskas both singled and scored.
Beverly 16, Saugus 0: Thomas Collins went 2-for-3 with four RBI, Mikey O’Leary had two hits and three RBI and Charlie Salerno knocked in four runs as the Panthers (5-5) scored in every inning to KO the Sachems. Jon Reyes added two hits to the assault and Andrew Dunleavy earned a complete game win.
Somerville 6, Peabody 3: Senior Pedro Flores hit a solo homer to tie the game 3-3 in the third but the Highlanders struck for three in the fourth and Peabody (5-6) couldn’t recover. Jack Smith pitched well in relief, striking out five in 2 1/3 hitless frames, and Ty Lomasney and Matt Nazzaro had two hits each.
Marblehead 29, Salem 1: The Magicians (7-4) topped Salem (0-11) for the second time in a 24-hour span. Greyson Leventhal (3 RBI) and James Machado (3 runs) had three hits each while Tim Wales doubled and had two RBI. Pitcher Madden Lyons got the win. Sandy Arendall had Salem’s RBI and Noah Thompson had a double.
SOFTBALL
Danvers 21, Swampscott 2: Senior captain Lila Flynn had three of her team’s 17 hits including a home run, a double and four RBI as Danvers won for the sixth time in seven games. Junior Kyla Moroney went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI and freshman Ellie Lindeman tossed a 3-hitter with 11 strikeouts for the Falcons (7-4).
Marblehead 5, Salem 2: In her first varsity pitching performance, freshman Kiley Lewis allowed just three hits and struck out two in a complete game win for the Magicians (now 9-5). Captain Tessa Andriano went 1-for-3 with an RBI and turned a double play at third base with an assist from her sister, Kate Andriano. Fellow captain Ashley Mortensen (2-for-4, RBI) and Lillian Reddy (2-for-3) also had big offensive showings.
The Witches got two hits and an RBI from Liv Loux, plus two hits and a run scored from Ivy Meehan, who reached base three times. Annie Thornett (7 K’s, 1 ER) again shined on the mound for Salem.
Beverly 8, Saugus 5: Kayla Everett, a sophomore, crushed a 2-run homer and went 2-for-4 with three RBI on the day as the Panthers (5-5) got back to .500. Meredith Johnston (2-for-4) also hit a home run while Keira MacNutt finished 3-for-5 with an RBI.
Essex Tech 12, Hamilton-Wenham 4: Teagan Bowler hit a 3-run homer and Adrianna Lassus also put one over the fence to spark the Hawks. Kayla Hanrahan earned the win for Essex Tech with a solid showing in the circle.
Peabody 16, Winthrop 4: Senior Lizzy Bettencourt homered for the third consecutive game and finished 2-for-3 with four RBI and three runs with the Tanners (7-3) exploding for nine runs in the fifth to put away a home win. Taylor King doubled in a 3-for-4 showing with four run scored while Olivia Guarino (2-for-3, 3 RBI), JJ Emerson (double, two hits, two RBI), Yanni Espinosa (2-for-4) and Olivia Pellecchia (2-for-2) all had impressive days at the plate.
Concord Academy 19, Pingree 11: Ellissa Karametsopolous hit a grand slam, a triple and had five RBI for the Highlanders. Kaitlyn Ferry also went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Charlotte Loughman was 3-for-3 and knocked home three and Antonella Najim had a four hit afternoon.
BOYS LACROSSE
Ipswich 19, Amesbury 4: Christian Gianakakis won 20 faceoffs while Finn Wright (4 goals) and JD Greenleaf (3 goals) sparked the offense for the Tigers (now 5-3). Vin Winter, Gavin Pulsifer, Mike Beaudoin and Luke Wile each added a pair of goals for Ipswich, with Travis Wilson and Tom Harrington each scoring once and adding an assist. Trevor Manning added one goal, and Jacoby Scorano and Miles Mattox both had one assist. Connor Wright stopped eight shots in net.
Cushing 8, Pingree 7: Despite two goals from Jake Hiltz, Henry Card and Nick Donovan (assist), the Highlanders slipped below .500 at 4-5 with the loss. Jack Abrahamson also scored; Connor O’Neil and Christian Renaud had one assist apiece; goalie Marcello Amadeo had nine saves; and Finley McClintock won 12-of-19 draws.
Pentucket 20, Essex Tech 8: Captain Tyler McHugh scored three goals and dished out two assists while continuing to go hard the entire game for the Hawks in a road setback. Luke Marino added two goals and one assist; Casey Collins picked up a pair of goals himself; Chase Ruberti finished with a goal and one assist; Quinn Makry and Jack Hanchett both had one assist; and goalies Connor Lacey (9 saves) and Quinn Woodson (6 saves) each played one half.
Arlington Catholic 7, Bishop Fenwick 3: Liam Kelsch had a big game for Fenwick () with 17 saves. John Tavernese, a junior middie, led the offense with a goal and one assist. CJ Masone and Logan Connolly also scored while Mikey Paolini added an assist.
Winthrop 17, Peabody 1: Captain Matt Vaz had the lone tally for the Tanners, with goalie Ben Wager stopping 12 shots.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Peabody 18, Salem 2: Brianna Symonds netted a hat trick, Leah Bresnahan scored four with two assists and Sophia Galbiati had three goals and three assists as the Tanners (8-3) won their third in a row. Victoria Vaz added a goal and seven draw controls while Bella Kassis, Sophia Kassis, Arianna Alvarado, Leah Ruffing, Elizabeth Moore, Sydney Costanzo and Sophia Marte all scored once.
Junior Makenzie Eichel and sophomore Jackie Fritz scored for Salem and Madyson Eichel scooped up seven grounders.
Ipswich 13, Georgetown 3: Natalie Elder notched five goals and Ella McCarthy scored two with three assists as the Tigers (8-2) rolled. Julia Druskat also scored two while Reagan McPartlin, Gracyn Cummins, Asuka Keough and Katherine Rafferty provided some excellent defense.
Essex Tech 13, Pentucket 11: Sydney Mace ripped the twine five times while Jayln Dos Santos added three goals to propel the Hawks (6-3) to victory. Kayla Perez (2), Nora Walsh, Megan Downing and Adrianna Holmes all added goals for Essex Tech.
BOYS TRACK
Masconomet 72, Marblehead 64: The 4×400 relay of Spencer Linonis, Luke Fiedler, Nicco Cefalo and Tim Lull won to help clinch the victory for the Chieftains. Other winners for Masconomet were Colin Moran (high hurdles), Conall Strangman (2-mile), Tim Lull (400), Zander Hamlin (800 and triple jump), Ryan Lamprey (shot put) and Adam Toleos (javelin), as well as the 4×100 relay team of Nathan Laubner, Linonis, Jack Duvall and Devlin Hixon.
GIRLS TENNIS
Swampscott 5, Salem 0: The Big Blue got great performances from winners Lilly Carr (6-2, 6-4), Janielle De La Cruz (6-1, 6-0), Eve Byrne (6-0, 6-0) and the teams of Sasha Fafel/Christy Spillane (4-6, 6-1, 10-6) and Fiona Flebbe/Sophia Armstrong.
Beverly 5, Peabody 0: CaCee Tanzalla had nine aces and broke serve six times in a 6-1, 6-2 win to spark the Panthers (5-3). Other winners were Adeline Kontos (6-1, 6-1) and Olivia Devereaux (6-2, 6-0) plus the teams of Claire Fitzgerald and Liliana JImenez (6-0, 6-0) and the twins of Sophie and Maddie Littere (6-4, 6-1).
Marblehead 4, Danvers 1: Two quick wins from doubles teams Joy Meshulam and Caroline Bruett (6-0, 6-1), plus Harper Mooney and Annie Tucker (6-0, 6-0), enabled the Magicians to win their fifth straight match. Callie Gilmore added a win at second singles (6-2, 6-2), as did first singles player Samara Dosch (6-1, 4-6, 6-3).
Bishop Fenwick 5, Arlington Catholic 0: Sweeping for the Crusaders were Caroline O’Hare (6-2, 6-2), Kit Wichroski (6-1, 6-0), Maggie Wichroski (6-0, 6-0) and the teams of Jackie Dormer/Kylie Murphy (6-0, 6-0) and Tiffany Dorsey/Brooke Piscitello (6-3, 6-2).
Ipswich 3, Amesbury 2: The Tigers (6-1) continued their strong start with wins by Phoebe Allen (6-0, 6-1) and a doubles sweep by juniors Eve Melzack /Anna Kalinowski and Sarah Belford/ Leila Harb (both 6-1, 6-1). Sophomore Mae Borgman played well but lost a three-hour, three-set match at first singles.
BOYS TENNIS
Marblehead 5, Danvers 0: The Magicians (6-2) got back in the win column as they returned to conference play with triumphs by Ty Cooper (6-0, 6-0), Alex Boehning (6-1, 6-0), Caleb Sidman (6-0, 6-1) and Adam Loughlin/Filip Wabno (6-2, 6-1) and Cordt Menzler/Jeff Kucharsky (6-0, 6-0).
Swampscott 3, Salem 2: The match came down to second doubles where Jack Ford and Leo Hellmann-Flatt won a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 battle to seal it for the Big Blue. Victor Zeissig (6-2, 6-0) and the team for Alex Levine and Jax Walker (6-3, 6-3) also prevailed for Swampscott.
Amesbury 4, Ipswich 1: The duo of Rowan King and Cole Flather won for the Tigers with a 6-3, 6-2 decision.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE
Endicott 22, Hartford 8: Eight goals in the first period helped the Gulls (now 14-4) to storm their way into the Conference of New England title game this Saturday. Former Masconomet star Emerson Clark (5 goals) and Mia Smith (4 goals, 2 assists) paced the offense for Endicott, which had six players in all score two goals or more.
MEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE
Endicott 14, Roger Williams 7: Nick Graap (8 goals) outscored the visitors by himself as the Gulls won their 10th straight contest to advance to the CNE title game. Goalie Gio Panicola made seven saves while Adam Priest finished with a goal and two helpers for Endicott (14-3).
MEN’S COLLEGE TENNIS
Nichols 4, Endicott 2: The Gulls (13-8) were bounced from the CNE semifinals despite wins from Aaron Terpko (7-6, 7-6) and Spencer Smith (6-1, 7-5) at fifth and singles singles, respectively.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Trinity 12, Endicott 11: A rare loss at home dropped the Gulls to 28-8 on the season. TJ Liponis had three hits and four RBI for the locals, including a 3-run dinger. Paul Armstrong, John Fusco and Trevor Kamuda each had two RBI apiece.
