GIRLS SOCCER
Beverly 2, Marblehead 1: Freshman Jaydin Simspon was taken down on a breakaway with just under ten minutes to play and converted her penalty kick to break a 1-1 tie and send the Panthers (8-3-2) to a signature home win that knocked Marblehead (8-1-2) from the unbeaten ranks. Olivia Anketell finished a cross from Addie Abell to tie the game in the first half, Annabelle Miller and Ella Heckmen were outstanding all-around and Clara Kostro made six saves.
Pingree 2, Phillips Exeter 1: The Highlanders (7-2) played one of their best defensive games of the season and created plenty of scoring chances in an impressive road win. Emma Gilpin netted the game-winner while Kayla Smyrnios also scored and Sydney Rech earned an assist on both Pingree markers.
Waring 6, Chapel Hill Chauncey Hall 2: Juliette Hale scored twice while Una Norton, Astrid Everest, Katherine Steinmetz and Mariam Reda each tallied a goal to get the Wolfpack (1-3-1) their first win of the season.
Swampscott 5, Gloucester 0: Greta Siefken scored twice and assisted on another goal to help the Big Blue (5-1-3) extend their NEC Lynch standings lead. Cecelia Tripp added a goal with an assist, Jane Raymond had two helpers, Jenny Sanchez and Lyla Rogers potted one each and Eve Bryne earned the team’s sixth shutout in nine games.
Saugus 6, Salem 1: Jackie Fritz had the lone goal for the Witches, who fell to 7-4-1.
Bishop Feehan 3, Bishop Fenwick 0: The Crusaders were blanked by the unbeaten Shamrocks.
BOYS SOCCER
Beverly 2, Marblehead 1: Down a goal at halftime, the Panthers (12-1) got the tying goal from senior Dino Berbic with 20 minutes to play, then the game-winner from sophomore Isaac Esquincalnha with four minutes to go. Branden Rodkey’s corner kick helped set up the game-winner, with Daniel Silva assisting on Berbic’s tally. Center back Andrew Braganca had an excellent game for Beverly, which got some spectacular saves from goalie Adam Porcello to help his team remain atop the NEC.
Masconomet 4, Danvers 0: Tim Lull and Gabe Fatin both had a goal and an assist for Masconomet (10-2-1), with Luke Fiedler and Mate Mroczek also scoring. Quinn Lodewick had two assists while Matteo Steffanelli and Anwar Ichcho both played well in the midfield, as did Norman James, John Green and Max Cabrera up top.
Swampscott 4, Gloucester 0: George Spellios and Maxim Asipenko each scored two second half goals to send the Big Blue (5-4-2) to a home win under the lights.
Bishop Feehan 7, Bishop Fenwick 2: Edwin Flores scored his sixth goal and Elias Rodriguez his second while Marcus Simon assisted on the latter as the Crusaders slipped to 3-4-3. Freshmen goalies Mason Oreste (5 saves) and Giovanni Vanoni (2 saves) both saw time.
FIELD HOCKEY
Peabody 8, Malden 0: The Tanners put 40 shots on net on Senior Day and scored eight times to pick up their third win of the season. Captain Chris Troncoso (2 assists) and Elizabeth Moore each had two goals, sophomore Kylee Bettencourt also scoring twice, to lead the way. Rachley Blanco Lora’s first varsity goal gave Peabody a lead it would never relinquish. Captain Karley O’Connor had one goal, Yashvi Patel and Natalie Targett each had an assist, and captain Sophia Kassis made two saves.
Pingree 2, Phillips Exeter 0: In New Hampshire, the Highlanders got goals from Lucy Bush and captain Neely Payne and five saves from Piper Davekos to improve to 6-3. Tatum White picked up one assist and Lucia Ranaldi came up with one defensive save.
Masconomet 2, Malden Catholic 0: The unbeaten Chieftains (12-0-1) went on the road and took home a satisfying road shutout as goalie Sabrina Cafarelli turned away a dozen shots and Hannah Mitchell added a defensive save. Ava Gauvain had a goal and an assist; Sophia Carson also scored, and Mia Marques had one assist.
Marblehead 1, Everett 0: Elizabeth Hayes (1 save over three quarters) and Molly Beauchesne shared the shutout to give the Magicians (6-4-2) the win. Sadie Beane scored in the second quarter for Marblehead, with Keliane Salem assisting.
Hamilton-Wenham 3, Rockport 0: Samantha Nevins had a pair of goals and Ruby Gladchun turned in a three-save shutout to push the Generals over .500 at 6-5-3. Molly Ryan also scored and picked up one helper, with Lucine Revette and Viola Fazio adding assists.
Lynnfield 3, Essex Tech 0: Despite a North Shore season-best 26 saves from junior goalie Frankie Roper, the Hawks (2-8-3) lost at home. Makenna Chase had “the game of her life” as well according to Essex Tech head coach Cally McSweeney.
Manchester Essex 6, Ipswich 0: The road defeat dropped the Tigers to 6-5-1.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Masconomet 26, Beverly 33: The Chieftains (4-1) used a pack mentality to win on the road with senior captain Owen Walsh and juniors Connal Strangman and Zander Hamlin all crossing together in 17:29 to take 3-4-5. Junior Duncan Cullinane was sixth in 17:53 and Milan Ladd (17:52), Will Allen (18:25) and Jonah Stephens (18:33) also placed in the top 10.
Peabody 19, Salem 44: Matt McCusker won the race for the Tanners, who used their depth to take spots three-through-eight behind Logan George, Aidan Trainor, Luke Murphy, Mohamed Lhassouani, Jackson Guerreiro and Osama Mishal. Brooks Workman paced the Witches with a second place finish.
Marblehead 17, Danvers 43: Senior captain Zach Pike finished in first place, followed by Will Cruikshank in second, Henrik Adams in third and Filip Grubor in fourth as the Magicians improved to 3-3.
Kyle Hampe (5th place), Marcus Morais (6th), Levi James (9th), Jason Rooney (11th), and Miles Pietal (14th overall, 12th in scoring) all ran home course PRs to earn points for the Falcons (now 0-5).
Hamilton-Wenham 15, Georgetown 49: Captains Seth Glidden and Cole Regan both finished in 16:25 over the 2.9 mile course to power the unbeaten Generals (4-0).
Manchester Essex 20, Ipswich 43: A winning time of 16:36 by senior Alex Jones of Ipswich finish first overall. Also breaking 20 minutes were fellow Tigers Benji Lochtfeld, a junior (18:21), senior Alex Young (18:47), sophomore CJ Jolliffe (19:40), senior Ange Tshibambe (19:41) and junior captain Isaiah McKenzie (19:52).
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Masconomet 21, Beverly 34: Senior Madi Gibeau-Schmitt won the race and the Chieftains prevailed on the road. Sophomore Abby Williams came in third while junior Clara Alberts was fourth, junior Mara Siewko placed fifth and senior Stella Glynn placed sixth. Grace Corbett had a great race for Beverly, finishing second overall, and Claire Healey and Chloe Blosser crossed in sixth and seventh, respectively.
Marblehead 22, Danvers 34: Marri O’Connell and Sarah Munroe finished first and second, respectively, for the fifth straight meet to keep the Magicians (6-0) unbeaten. Norah Walsh edged out a Danvers runner to place fifth overall, with Ruby Assa taking seventh place and Evelina Beletsky turning in her best race of the season in eighth place.
Grace Conklin took third place and Madyson Danish fourth for the Falcons while earning personal best times. So did teammates Addison Lamar (6th place), Emily Sullivan (9th) and Paige Sherman (12th).
Peabody 19, Salem 40: Cece Toda won the race for the Tanners with teammates Avery Marcus, Lily Murphy, Ella Braz, Lauren Foley and Marley Lambert all placing in the top eight to help secure the win. Ivy Meehan had another strong showing for Salem with a second place finish.
Hamilton-Wenham 15, Georgetown 47: Improving to 4-0 on the season, the Generals saw captains Grace Rich and Asa Labell both finish in 20:20 over the 2.9 mile course.
Manchester Essex 19, Ipswich 44: A second place showing from freshman Annabelle Ma (22:08) led the Tigers. Her sister Jasmine (24:52), a junior, finished second for IHS, with captain Kameya Perron (25:13), fellow seniors Emma LaRochelle (25:30) and Sarah Jolliffe (26:09) following suit.
GOLF
Masconomet 37 1/2, Swampscott 34 1/2: Cole Velardo shot 1-over at Tedesco and the Chieftains finished the regular season unbeaten at 13-0-1 to win the Northeastern Conference. Charlotte Rollins, Blake Litchfield and Drew Nelson also won for the Chieftains. Swampscott got excellent rounds from Tyler Ostroff, Luke McGonaglo, Cole Manning, Sam Schepens, Mike Collins and Joe Dalelio.
Ipswich 169, Hamilton-Wenham 165: Senior Will Totten had 32 points and the Tigers (11-4, 7-2 CAL) posted their highest home point total of the season. Louis Harrington and Connor Wright both added 31 points in an impressive Senior Day at Ipswich Country Club.
Marblehead 44, Winthrop 28: Greyson Leventhal was medalist with a 35 and won his match 7.5 to 1.5 as the Magicians improved to 10-2-2. Tyler Forbes (5.5 to 3.5), Max King (5-4) and Will Macrina (5.5 to 3.5) each prevailed while shooting 36s; others who were triumphant for MHS included captain Joy Meshulam (5.5 to 3.5) and Colby Moore (6-3). In addition, Bowden Laramie tied his match, 4.5 to 4.5.
Danvers 41 1/2, Salem 20 1/2: Chris Hanson won his match on Senior Day for the Witches while Matt Kenney tied and Shea Christel also had a solid showing.
Gloucester 40 1/2, Beverly 31 1/2: The Panthers slipped to 9-5 with a setback at Bass Rocks in Gloucester. Anthony Barror (6-3) and captain Drew Murphy (5.5 to 3.5) won their matches at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots, respectively.
VOLLEYBALL
Marblehead 3, Peabody 0: Now 7-0 in NEC competition and 10-2 overall, the Magicians rolled to a 25-13, 25-15, 25-22 victory as Greta Sachs had 14 kills, Lila Moniz 11 and Mari Modrzynska 10. Eva Burke added 28 assists as the team’s setter, and libero Sydney Faris had a 2.4 serve-receive rating and 22 digs.
Masconomet 3, Beverly 0: Elise Clapp, a 12th grader, powered her team with four service aces and starred defensively by coming up with key digs to keep rallies going as the Chieftains swept the Panthers on Senior Night. Senior captain Cate Wettstone (14 kills) led the team in passing while showing on-court versatility. Junior Keira Conley (4 blocks) als played well.
Playing well for Beverly (now 6-8) were Thea Pisani-Gross and Victoria Mulumba.
Swampscott 3, Salem 2: The Big Blue effectively locked up a second straight NEC Lynch title with a fifth set tiebreaker win over Salem. Senior captain Lauren Paul (13 kills, 3 blocks, 2 digs) and fellow senior Hayden Haskell (2 aces, 16 service points, 13 digs) led the winners to a 25-22, 25-18, 26-28, 25-23, 15-11 triumph.
Captain Yanalis Ventura paced the Witches with 31 digs while senior Liv Loux added eight kills and 15 digs. Senior Captain Annie Thornett had six kills and 14 digs and sophomore Jenna Phelps added seven kills and three blocks. Senior captain Mia Silva dished out 26 assists and had six kills of her own in the thriller.
MEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER
Salem State 1, Clark 1: Jadiel Bonfim had an early goal for the Vikings (5-3-4), who earned a point at home thanks in part to six saves in net from Brady Whitemarsh.
Gordon 2, Nichols 0: Benny Simpson buried an insurance goal with less than two minutes to go and Nick Vavala scored the game-winner for Gordon.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER
Gordon 8, Nichols 1: Eowyn Lapp posted another hat trick as the Scots (4-7-1) rolled at home. Ava Forbes Smith added two goals with two assists in a productive outing.
Plymouth State 1, Salem State 0: Beverly native Kayla Cimon posted the shutout for the Panthers while Salem State (6-4-2) got 10 saves from Ava Guyer in a defensive battle.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE TENNIS
Salem State 4, Southern Maine 3: Samantha Tenney’s comeback three-set win at fourth singles (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) helped guide the Vikings (now 4-2) to victory. No. 3 singles player Samantha Bidzerkowny (6-4, 7-6), No. 5 Ryann Tripp (6-1, 6-1) and No. 6 Delaney Cox (6-0, 6-0) also earned singles wins for SSU.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL
Endicott 3, Nichols 0: Ava Grace Dresbeck had 13 kills to lead the Gulls (9-8) to a sweep at home.
Gordon 3, Western New England 0: Annika Schmitt had 37 assists along with seven aces and the Scots moved to 13-5 with a sweep in conference play.
COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY
Endicott 8, St. Joseph Maine 1: The nationally ranked No. 12 Gulls cruised thank to a four goal outburst from Tori Swanson. Maddy Dengler had four assists as well for once beaten Endicott, which won its 11th straight game.
