CRESAPTOWN — An inmate’s death Wednesday at the Western Correctional Institution is under investigation.
Christopher White, 33, was pronounced dead by county EMS personnel and transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore to determine the cause and manner of death, according to the Maryland State Police.
A suspect in White’s death, who is also an inmate, was identified, police said. The suspect was not being identified until charges are placed.
Police said that a preliminary investigation indicates White was found unresponsive in his cell and later pronounced dead. His cellmate was believed to be in the cell at the time of White’s death.
An Allegany County Joint Communications Center spokesperson said county EMS and fire department units were dispatched to the maximum-security McMullen Highway prison just before 2 p.m.
Ambulances from Cresaptown and LaVale, Allegany County Department of Emergency Services and Bowling Green Volunteer Fire Department responded, according to the Joint Communications Center spokesperson.
According to state police, at approximately 3 p.m., investigators assigned to the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit were contacted by investigators from the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit about the death.
