MANKATO — As the school year kicks off, two area schools are already being recognized for their commitment to students and education.
North Elementary in St. Peter and Washington Elementary in Mankato were named a 2025-26 Minnesota School of Excellence, a distinction handed out by the Minnesota Elementary School Principals’ Association (MESPA).
“We live by the idea that ‘When we know better, we do better,’ and our staff and students embrace that mindset every day. … I couldn’t be more proud of our school community for the way we’ve committed to learning, reflecting, and improving together,” North Elementary Principal Darin Doherty said in a press release.
Ann Haggerty, principal at Washington Elementary, also points to their commitment to student support as a reason for the recognition.
“This achievement highlights our commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where all students are empowered to lead and learn, and where we intentionally use our diverse community to enrich the educational experience for everyone. We are deeply grateful for this honor, which celebrates the collaborative spirit of our teachers, staff, students, and families,” she said in a release.
MESPA Executive Director Michelle Krell noted that both schools were being honored thanks to their determination to support students beyond the typical classroom setting.
“North Elementary’s story goes beyond what happens inside the classroom. It’s about how the school weaves itself into the life of the community — serving students, families, and neighbors in ways that leave a lasting impact,” Krell said.
“Washington Elementary is a powerful example of what happens when a school community lives and breathes its mission and vision–supporting every student and building strong partnerships with families.”
Washington and North Elementary were two of just 13 schools recognized with the honor.
