On Wednesday night, the No. 7 seed Northeastern Huskies defeated the No. 10 seed Merrimack College, 4-0, in the first round of the Hockey East tournament played at Matthews Arena.
Northeastern took a 1-0 lead after the first period that saw the Warriors hit the post three different times. The Huskies added two more goals in the second and one more in the third, an empty-netter, to officially put the game away. Alex Campbell, Vinny Borgesi, Pito Walton and Dylan Hryckowian had single tallies in the win.
Northeastern outshot Merrimack, 26-22. Hugo Ollas made 22 saves.
The loss ends Merrimack’s season with an overall record of 13-21-1. This marked just the second time all season that the Warriors were shut out, with the first one coming back on October 13th in a 1-0 overtime non-league loss to Arizona State.
Northeastern (17-15-3) won three of four contests this season over Merrimack.
In other opening round games, UNH defeated UMass-Lowell, 1-0, and UConn topped Vermont, 4-1.
