The Walton football team opened its 2024 season with a 24-12 road win against Oneonta on Friday.
Parker Cash opened the scoring for the Warriors with a 68-yard touchdown run. Walton’s defense got in on the scoring when Landon Taylor recorded a sack for a safety to make it 8-0.
Walton made it 16-0 right before halftime when Caleb Moren found London Gardner for a 16-yard touchdown pass. Hayden Robinson would ice things in the second half with a rushing touchdown of his own.
Walton will be at Bainbridge-Guilford on Friday while Oneonta will visit Whitney Point on Thursday.
Cambridge-Salem 16, Delhi 8 (Saturday)
Missed opportunities cost Delhi in its season opener on Saturday as the Bulldogs fell to Cambridge-Salem 16-8.
Delhi drove inside the C-S 10-yard line twice in the first half but was unable to come away with points on either drive.
After falling behind 16-0, the Bulldogs finally got on the board in the fourth quarter when Zach Cornell hit Rocco Schnabel for a 45-yard touchdown pass. But Delhi was unable to come back to tie things up.
Ian Johnson led Delhi’s offense with 100 rushing yards while Adam Cook added 56 yards on the ground. Cornell finished with 106 yards through the air, a touchdown and an interception. Schnabel had four catches for 73 yards and Cook added 33 yards on four catches.
Cook was the team’s leading tackler with 13 while Lucas Nealis notched an interception.
Delhi will visit Chenango Valley on Friday.

CROSS COUNTRY
Oneonta was the site of the Dave “Flash” Forbes Invitational on Saturday, where the Oneonta boys and the Delhi/South Kortright girls won their respective team titles.
Keyon Ziaie of OHS led the boys field with a time of 16:34.3. He was joined in the top 10 by fellow Yellowjackets Colin Fletcher-Foster (third), Gabriel Rissberger (sixth) and Jackson Forbes (eighth).
Carson Strauss of Sidney finished seventh overall while Nelson VanMaaren and Jaden Lewis of DA/SK finished ninth and 10th, respectively.
In the girls race, Aurelia Comer of DA/SK was the top local finisher, placing third with a time of 20:50.6.
Other top runners from the local ranks included Unadilla Valley’s Andrea Favinger (fourth), DA/SK’s Lilly McGonigal (fifth), Madison Moore of Edmeston/Morris (seventh) and Maddie Ingham of Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton/Harpursville (11th).
Elsewhere, Cooperstown raced at the Blackbird Invitational at Voorheesville on Saturday.
Jacob Johnson was the top boys runner for the Hawkeyes, packing 12th overall (19:38). Owen Flannigan (15th) and Jonah Hitchcock (16th) also finished in the top 20.
On the girls side, Nora Craig finished 11th overall with a time of 24:01.

The Walton field hockey team opened its season by splitting a pair of games at the Windsor Tournament last weekend.
The Warriors fell to Deposit-Hancock 5-2 in the first round on Friday. Addyson Trimbell scored both goals for Walton while Mackenzie Roach made seven saves.
Amanda Ray scored four times for D-H.
In Saturday’s consolation game, Walton defeated Spencer-Van Etten/Candor 4-2.
Chasidy Constable had a hat trick for Walton while Reese Underwood also scored. Roach finished with two saves in goal.
Walton will host Vestal on Thursday.
