James Pritt, the head track coach at Stone Memorial High School, took a minute to take it all in after his team competed in the Class 2A SubSectional Track Championships in Watertown.
Several Panthers and Lady Panthers finished high enough at the meet to earn automatic berths in this week’s sectional competition in Fairview. A couple of the competitors also qualified for the sectional through at-large bids.
“I didn’t think we would be able to send this many kids to the sectional,” said Pritt. “Two thirds of our kids had personal bests. It is just a great day for the kids and they’ve been working so hard to get where they are. It is all paying off.”
The top five finishers from each event qualified for the sectional contest May 8 in Fairview.
The Stone Memorial girls had several first place finishes. Shelby Vitous won the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 28 seconds. She finished second in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:14.
Stone did well in the relay events. The 4×400 team finished first with a time of 4:32. The 4×100 and 4×200 teams finished third. The 4×800 meter squad was fourth overall.
Nathan Wagner and Trevor Sinard highlighted the day for the Stone boys. Wagner won the 800 and 1600 meters, including a time of 1:59 in the 800.
