The Visually Impaired Support Group of Cumberland County welcomes VIS member Jordan Balcom as their guest speaker at their upcoming October meeting. Jordan lost his eyesight unexpectedly at the young age of 23 due to a reoccurring eye inflammation.
Many visually impaired are hesitant to use a cane to assist them on their mobility due to a variety of reasons. This meeting will give provide them and others with valuable information to leverage independence and quality of life.
Through personal experience, formal training and trial and error, Mr. Balcom has become proficient and knowledgeable on using his white cane. His presentation will cover: navigating public areas and uneven walking surfaces; common courtesies when using a white cane and overcoming challenges. Members are encouraged to bring their canes to this meeting.
VIS’s goal is to enhance and improve the lives of visually impaired and blind people with support, information, tools, and resources to augment mobility, independence and quality of life.
