POTOMAC — The Village of Potomac will be celebrating 150 years today.
There will be multiple events to commemorate the occasion, like a 5K run, a parade, bingo, food, music, and historical talks.
The events will take place at Millie Curtis Park on West State Street, with the 5k kicking off at 8 a.m., followed by the Sesquicentennial Parade at 11:30 a.m.
“I feel that it is important for those of all ages to understand and respect their community’s past as they move forward,” says Angie Walsh, one of the organizers. “Scattered around town are signs, known as “Artesian Anecdotes” (referring to our artesian wells), which tell the story of what once stood in a particular spot. We also have a small park, in which we have “Potomac Personality” signs, honoring individuals who have made an impact on our community.”
The Grand Marshal of the parade will be 100-year-old Dave Judy.
There will also be face-painting, old-fashioned games like a three-legged race, sack race, and more, plus an Archery demonstration, inflatables for kids, multiple food trucks, Bingo, a cake walk, bags tournament, a dunk tank, and more.
“Our history talk, entitled “Our Township, Our Story” has a panel of five Potomac natives, ranging in age from 100 to 50,” Walsh says. “They will discuss their memories, and we will also open it to the audience’s stories as well.”
This event coincides with many other events in Vermilion County as the county celebrates 200 years of existence.
