TRAVERSE CITY, Michigan — One suspect in custody after reports of a mass stabbing at a Walmart Supercenter in Michigan Saturday afternoon.
Eleven people were injured and taken to Munson Medical Center. As of Saturday evening, they were all alive, and three were in surgery, according to Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea.
He confirmed that victims were injured in a random attack with a folding knife. Employees were interviewed by Michigan State Police at a nearby restaurant and, at 6:55 p.m. were able to re-enter Walmart to get their belongings.
Michigan State Police crime lab personnel are en route to assist with forensics, Shea said. Munson Medical Center officials confirmed in a social media post the number of people injured and said the emergency room is experiencing higher-than-usual patient volumes. An alert about the active incident was first posted by Grand Traverse 911 just before 5 p.m.
