FLINTSTONE — Few details have emerged into Sunday’s fatal crash near the intersection of National Pike and Old Cumberland Road, east of Flintstone, according to Allegany County Sheriff’s Office Cpl. Andy Plummer.
“The sheriff’s office is still attempting to identify the operator and notify the next of kin,” Plummer said Sunday afternoon.
The crash was reported by a nearby resident just after 3 a.m. on Sunday between John Stewart and Old Cumberland roads to the Allegany County Joint Communications Center.
The initial caller reported hearing an explosion and seeing a fire across from their house, the Joint Communications Center spokesperson said.
Units from Flintstone, Orleans and Baltimore Pike volunteer fire departments and Allegany County Department of Emergency Services responded to the scene.
When firefighters arrived, they found an overturned vehicle that was engulfed in flames, the Joint Communications Center spokesperson said.
The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office Crash and Technology teams, assisted by the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal, is assisting with the investigation, according to Sgt. Christopher Hill.
Hill said the vehicle involved was a red Toyota RAV4.
Plummer said that the initial investigation showed that the vehicle was traveling west on National Pike when the crash occurred.
The body of the lone occupant was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, according to Plummer.
Detours and roadway control were provided by the Maryland State Highway Administration, according to Hill.
