LAVALE — The Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit and Child Protective Services are investigating after a child fell Wednesday from a second-story window at a LaVale hotel on National Highway, according to Allegany County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Dave Morgan.
“The 6-year-old male fell from (a) second-story window and suffered injuries,” Morgan said.
The incident at 1301 National Highway, formerly the Super 8 Motel, was reported to the Joint Communications Center just after 6 p.m., according to a spokesperson.
Reports from the scene indicated the 6-year-old suffered a head injury after falling approximately 30 feet.
The boy was taken by Trooper 5, a Maryland State Police Aviation Command medevac, to WVU Children’s Hospital, a pediatric trauma center on the campus of J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia, according to the Joint Communications Center spokesperson.
Allegany County Joint Communications Center Chief Steve Shipley said based off information received in the initial 911 call, a helicopter was launched.
“In cases involving children that may require specialty care, our communications staff can request aviation be launched based off the information they receive,” Shipley said. “In this instance, getting the child to a pediatric trauma center in a timely manner.”
A representative who answered the phone at the hotel on Thursday said the name has changed to the LaVale Inn and the business is open.
“I am not authorized to release any information regarding the incident,” the representative said. “You can reach out to the police department. They will have all the information.”
The Times-News attempted to confirm the corporate owners of the establishment, however the representative reiterated that he is not allowed to disclose any information.
Units from LaVale and Corriganville volunteer fire departments, ambulances from LaVale Rescue, Allegany County Department of Emergency Services and a county EMS supervisor responded.
The boy was transported by ambulance from the hotel to a landing zone at Lions Field, off Braddock Road, according to the Joint Communications Center spokesperson.
The condition of the child was not available Thursday.
