The former monastery of The Discalced Carmelite nuns of Danvers will open its doors one more time on Aug. 17 for an auction of its many unique contents including a marble altar, garden ornaments and multiple stained-glass windows.
Beverly-based Kaminski Auctions will be hosting the on-site auction as well as a preview of the items from Aug. 14-16. Notable objects from the chapel that it highlighted include various lighting fixtures, chalices, candlesticks, monstraces, garden statuary, multi-sectional glass windows and more.
Most of the auction items are done in the modernism style, making them uniquely appealing to collectors in search of mid-century items for their collections, Kaminski Auctions indicated.
Originally opened in 1958 on land previously occupied by a golf course, the monastery dedicated to Saint Therese of Liseux France permanently closed after its last Easter Mass in April 2023.
The Carmelite order, originally founded in 1562, are nuns and friars who have chosen to live in cloistered monasteries to dedicate themselves to lives of prayer and contemplation. They trace their roots back to the 13th century hermits who gathered on Mount Carmel to live entirely dedicated to prayer, poverty, and penance.
The Carmelites first came to the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston in 1890, eventually growing so far as to require the establishment of another community in Danvers.
Bidding is available in person, by phone or absentee bid and online with KaminskiLIVE, the company’s online bidding platform. Buyers will be responsible for the removal and associated costs of transporting purchased items.
Kaminski Auctions will provide recommendations for two experienced companies specializing in glass removal and transport to facilitate the process.
The auction will take place on Aug. 17 at 11 a.m. at the monastery at 15 Mount Carmel Road, Danvers. The preview for the auction will take place on Aug. 14-16, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the monastery.
