Title for Wojcik
Former North Andover High star Erika Wojcik, now a sophomore at Southern New Hampshire University, took home the 800-meter title at the Northeast-10 Indoor Track Championships with a personal record 2:15.18. She beat the runner-up by more than three seconds. She was also a member of the 4×800 that was fifth at the NE-10 championship.
Max Burt to Tigers
After seven years in the New York Yankees system, North Andover native Max Burt is now a member of the Detroit Tigers organization.
Burt, a 2014 St. John’s Prep grad who was drafted in 2018 out of Northeastern University by the Yankees in the 28th round, signed his deal last Monday.
Now 29-years-old, Burt came up as a shortstop but has played all infield positions, primarily at third base over the last five years.
He’s hoping to pull “a Mike Yastrzemski.” Mike Yaz, also an SJP grad, played six years with the Orioles organization before joining the San Francisco Giants and the rest his history.
Burt has hit .220 over his minor league career, but is noted as one of the minor league’s top defensive infielders.
Dowd sets record
North Andover’s Tripp Dowd set a school record with his 3,222 points to place ninth at the MSTCA Indoor Pentathlon on Thursday. That broke the previous Scarlet Knights record of 3,177 set by Joe Staudt in 2014.
Dowd was one of two locals to set a school record, along with Carlos Quintana of Central Catholic (3,363 points, fifth place).
Wallace earns save
Methuen’s Jacob Wallace made his first spring training appearance for the Atlanta Braves this week, picking up the save in a win over the Baltimore Orioles. Wallace struck out two and didn’t allow a run.
Wallace is currently sharing a locker room with Andover’s Mike Yastrzemski, also in his first season with the Braves organization.
Harris a mentor
On Thursday, Boston Bruins defenseman Jordan Harris of Haverhill announced the launch of his new “Harris’ Huskies,” mentorship program.
The initiative will connect local youth hockey players with role models from Harris’ alma mater — the Northeastern University hockey team with the goal to grow the sport and create opportunities.
The program will work with “SCORE Boston” – a non-profit organization focused on “supporting youth who would not otherwise have the chance to participate in hockey.”
