Alex centered Prep
When the eventual 2023 Division 1 finalist St. John’s Prep football needed a center this fall after an injury, they found a perfect fit in senior Alex Cianciaruso of North Andover.
“Alex started at center for us from Week 2,” said Eagles head coach Brian St. Pierre. “He did a very solid job. He’s a very hard working kid. He’s undersized (5-foot-10, 236 pounds), but competes hard and solidified that spot when we lost our starting center.”
Oppenheim advances to Stage 3
It wasn’t easy, but Andover’s Rob Oppenheim has advanced the final stage of the Korn Ferry Tour Q-School.
Oppenheim finished the fourth round with a 1-under par 71, tying for 11th place (12th place and ties advance).
Oppenheim double-bogeyed the last hole, but had worked up enough cushion, including an eagle earlier on the back nine.
He advances to the final stage of the PGA Tour’s “triple-A” equivalent. But there is one caveat in the Dec. 14 event at TPC Sawgrass.
The top five finishers will earn PGA Tour cards in 2024.
Wolfendale in action
Former Brooks School star QB Michael Wolfendale of Methuen recently saw his first college football action, as a freshman for Bowdoin College.
Against Trinity, Wolfendale completed 4 of 5 passes for 66 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown, and carried once for 7 yards.
Goss honored
Former Windham High Eagle-Tribune All-Star and current Phillips Academy postgrad Aidan Goss has been named to the Northeast Prep Football Conference All-League second team defense.
The linebacker finished the fall with 53 tackles, three pass breakups and one forced fumble.
Try track, wrestling
It’s always important this time of year, as high school sports like basketball and hockey make cuts to their rosters, that — if you don’t make that team — give track or wrestling a try. I can’t tell you how many athletes I’ve interviewed that tried track on a whim, and it ended up changing their lives both as an athlete and in life.
Captains Corner
The fall sports season is over, but we at The Eagle-Tribune still want to honor the area’s high school captains as part of our Captains Corner series. Coaches — or parents or the athletes themselves — who would like their captains featured are welcome to submit a photo to dwillis@eagletribune.com. Photos should have all captains featured and ideally in uniform.
