UMass Lowell signs stars
A trio of local girls track stars will continue their college careers at UMass Lowell.
Haverhill High’s Brenna Corcoran and Sophia Riley will soon be River Hawks. At the 2024 MVC Indoor Championship, Eagle-Tribune All-Star Corcoran was second in the 600 (1:39.58), while Riley was right behind in the same event in third (1:40.26).
Also headed to UMass Lowell is Central Catholic Eagle-Tribune All-Star Anya Neira. The Methuen resident won the MVC title in the 300 (40.73).
Curran, Nugent honored
Two of the area’s premier athletic directors took home major honors this week at the 49th annual Massachusetts Secondary Schools Athletic Directors Association (MSSADA) Conference.
Methuen’s Matt Curran was name District 4 Athletic Director of the Year. The former Ranger two-sport star (class of 1994) has been the school’s AD since 2016.
Meanwhile, North Andover AD Steve Nugent took home the District 4 Ted Damko Award, which “recognizes new ADs (3-5 years of experience) that are positively impacting high school sports.” The North Andover High graduate (class of 1987) and state champion track coach has been North Andover’s AD since 2021.
Both ADs received plenty of praise from their school.
Methuen star quarterback Drew Eason wrote of Curran: “Best of the best!”
North Andover head football coach John Dubzinski wrote of Nugent: “The best in the business!! Congratulations Steve!! Well deserved!”
Desrosiers enters portal
Former Central Catholic football and track star Greg Desrosiers is reportedly on the move again. The UMass Amherst running back/kick returner has entered the transfer portal, multiple sites are reporting.
Last fall for the Minutemen, Desrosiers rushed for 313 yards and four touchdowns, caught 15 passes for 185 yards and two TDs and returned 31 kickoffs for 597 yards. He also a standout in the heptathlon in track.
Desrosiers began his college career at the Louisville before transferring to UMass.
