UML offers Medina
Former Lawrence High girls basketball star Tyanna Medina has received an offer from Division 1 UMass Lowell, her Rivals Basketball Club announced this week.
Medina was a two-time Eagle-Tribune All-Star for Lawrence, after her freshman season was cancelled due to the COVID pandemic. She averaged 22.0 points per game as a junior and 19.5 points a game as a sophomore. The 5-foot-7 combo guard transferred to prep power Kimball Union before the 2023-24 school year.
Gendron to Providence
Ex-Central Catholic boys hockey standout Cam Gendron is headed to play for Providence College this coming winter, Mark Divver from the New England Hockey Journal reports. He played the last four seasons for the University of New Hampshire (five goals).
Gendron spent two season (2014-16) at Central Catholic (16 goals in 41 games). He then played two seasons for the Winchendon School (28 goals) and two more seasons for the NAHL’s New Jersey Junior Titans (23 goals).
Remembering “Mr. Martin”
The local sports scene lost a beloved figure this week, with the passing of Bill Martin — who was synonymous with Pentucket Regional athletics — at 80-years-old following a period of ill health.
Martin had an outstanding 11-year run as Pentucket’s head softball coach, qualifying for the state tournament 10 times, winning five Cape Ann League titles and advancing to the North Finals six times. He also coached baseball, football and girls basketball for the Sachems — as they were then known — and later was the public address announcer during games for the football team’s run to three straight Eastern Mass. titles games (1999-2001).
Also a highly-respected English teacher and guidance counselor at Pentucket, Martin retired in 2003. He also took pride in being a member of the Northeastern University baseball team that went to the 1966 College World Series.
Captains Corner
We are preparing to wrap up honoring the athletes from the 2023-24 school year, as part of our Captains Corner series. But we are still accepting your captains photos. Coaches — or parents or the athletes themselves — who would like their captains featured are welcome to submit a photo to dwillis@eagletribune.com. Photos should have all captains featured and ideally in uniform.
One Final Thought
As Michael Muldoon used to say, “If you can bring a smile to someone’s face today, just do it!
