Goncalves sets record
Haverhill High senior track star Maddie Goncalves set a new Hillies indoor track school record with a throw of 37-8.25 at the Winter Classic Festival held at Reggie Lewis.
That shattered the previous Haverhill record of 36-9 set by Gretchen Anderson in 1995. Goncalves, a returning Eagle-Tribune All-Star, threw 37-10.5 last spring, and took second at MVCs.
Hollingsworth hits 1,000
Former Methuen High two-time Eagle-Tribune girls hockey MVP Kaia Hollingsworth recently recorded her 1,000th career save as a member of the Salem State University women’s hockey team.
Hollinsworth, a senior, has started 11 of Salem State’s 12 games this winter. She has a 2.79 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage. The Vikings entered the Christmas break on a three-game winning streak.
Zinter unanimous All-American
University of Michigan star offensive lineman Zak Zinter of North Andover has been voted a unanimous first-team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association.
Zinter becomes just the ninth Michigan Wolverine to earn unanimous All-American honors. He joins a stellar list that includes Heisman Trophy winner and NFL Hall of Famer Charles Woodson, fellow Hall of Famer Steve Hutchinson and current New England Patriots defensive back Jabrill Peppers.
Zinter is currently on the mend from a broken tibia and fibula.
Kassis on the move
Former Central Catholic Eagle-Tribune football All-Star Mark Kassis has entered the transfer portal after a breakout season for the Colby College football team.
Kassis a linebacker, made 46 tackles, 20 solo, in nine games for Colby this past fall. In all or part of three seasons for the Mules, he recorded 79 tackles in 21 games played.
NECC Hall nominations
Nominations are being accepted for the Northern Essex Community College Hall of Fame Class of 2024. The ceremony will take place on March 2, 2024. For additional information, visit neccknights.com/Hall_of_Fame or contact NECC athletic director Dan Blair at email@example.com
The spring sports season now underway, we at The Eagle-Tribune still want to honor the area’s high school captains as part of our Captains Corner series. Coaches — or parents or the athletes themselves — who would like their captains featured are welcome to submit a photo to firstname.lastname@example.org. Photos should have all captains featured and ideally in uniform.
