Raider college plans
Three Central Catholic stars announced their college sports plans.
Running back/defensive back Jefferson Morales will play football at Saint Anselm (Manchester, N.H.) The All-MVC pick starred on defense, while rushing for 546 yards with seven touchdowns for the MVC1 champs.
Eagle-Tribune All-Star Franchesca Thurston will continue her track career at Bryant University. Last spring, she threw area-best 125-11 to place 12th at New Balance Nationals, the seventh best throw in region history.
Camryn Donlan will play lacrosse at Bentley University. The midfielder scored 15 goals, helping lead the Raiders to the Division 1 title last spring.
MIAA Power Rankings
The latest round of MIAA Power Rankings has been released.
Four local squads are in the Division 1 boys hoops playoff picture, with Central Catholic at No. 6, Andover No. 10, Niko Catalano and North Andover No. 16 and Methuen No. 26. Greater Lawrence is No. 5 in Division 3.
Three local squads are in playoff position in Division 1 girls hoop. Central Catholic’s No. 9, Andover No. 22 and North Andover is clinging to the final postseason spot, No. 32.
In Division 1 girls hockey, HPNA is No. 4, Methuen/Tewksbury is No. 5, Andover is No. 12 and Central Catholic is No. 23.
In boys hockey, Methuen is No. 10 in Division 3, North Andover is No. 26 in Division 2 and Central Catholic is No. 28 and Andover is No. 29 in Division 1.
N.H. Shrine honorees
The rosters have been announced for the 72nd New Hampshire/Vermont Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl All-Star football game.
Division I champion Pinkerton will be represented by defensive back David Souther and linebacker Dino Savvas. Both were All-New Hampshire Division I Central picks this fall, while Savvas made nine tackles in the title game win over Londonderry. Windham’s Jake Michalik was also selected.
The game will be played Aug. 2 at Vermont State-Castleton’s Dave Wolk Stadium. Concord’s Jim Corkum will serve as coach for New Hampshire, which leads the series 50-18-2.
Absent Embiid
Philadelphia 76ers star center Joel Embiid has long been criticized for his lack of durability. Heading into the weekend, Embiid had played in 447 career games, while sitting out a whopping 401 games. He’s played in 14 games this season.
