SYRACUSE — The top prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York resigned Monday, effective immediately.
Carla B. Freedman, who became the first female U.S. Attorney in the district when she was sworn into the position in October 2021, had been nominated by President Joe Biden in August 2021 and confirmed that fall by the Senate.
Freedman, who grew up in Syracuse, previously served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Syracuse office of the Northern District of New York from 2007 through 2021. She was a Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney and the Narcotics Chief from February 2018 through 2021. She also served as Deputy Narcotics Chief from 2016 through 2018.
NORTHERN DISTRICT
The Northern District of New York covers 32 upstate counties, including Essex, Clinton and Franklin counties.
“For over 17 years, I have had the honor and privilege of working at the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York, first as an Assistant United States Attorney, and for the past three years, leading the office as the United States Attorney,” Freedman said in a statement.
“During my tenure I have had the good fortune to work with some of the finest public servants in my office as well as with our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners. I could not be more proud of the work and accomplishments we have achieved in the pursuit of justice, always with integrity and commitment to the rule of law.”
HANLON NOW ACTING
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Hanlon now serves as Acting United States Attorney.
Immediately prior to his appointment, Hanlon served as the office’s First Assistant U.S. Attorney, and during his 17 years with the office he has also served as the Criminal Chief, Deputy Criminal Chief and Narcotics Chief/ Organized Crime/Drug Enforcement Task Force Coordinator.
Before joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Mr. Hanlon was an assistant district attorney in the Rensselaer County District Attorney’s Office.
In his 11 years with that office, he served as Chief Assistant District Attorney and the Narcotics Bureau Chief.
Hanlon earned his law degree from Albany Law School, and his undergraduate degree from the SUNY Binghamton.
