Niagara Falls firefighters helped two people from the second floor of a burning Whitney Avenue home early Monday morning.
The fire was reported about 6:20 a.m. Monday at 1705 Whitney Ave. The front porch of the home was fully engulfed in fire when firefighters arrived on the scene.
While the home was vacant, police said four squatters were inside at the time of the fire. Two fled through the rear of the home and were met by police. They told officers two more people were inside and firefighters were able to find them on the second floor of the home. Firefighters requested a ladder to a window on the west side of the home to get the people out.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the porch and exterior of the home. Reports for the scene indicate that a couch on the porch appeared to have been set on fire.
The fire remains under investigation.
