A Wheatfield man is in custody on a number of outstanding arrest warrants after a stand-off with Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies Thursday morning.
Deputies said they spotted Daniel Couturiaux, 53, outside his home on the 2900 block of Krueger Road about 9:46 a.m. The deputies said they had information that Couturiaux was wanted on two “active felony arrest warrants” by the Daytona Beach Police Department in Volusia County, Florida.
As the deputies attempted to take Couturiaux into custody outside his home, he reportedly tried to run away from them. The deputies said they tried to use a Taser on Couturiaux, but it failed to stop him.
Couturiaux was able to get inside his home and them barricaded himself inside the residence. Sheriff’s deputies said he refused their “commands to come out of the house.”
Sheriff’s officials said they “activated” their Emergency Response Team (ERT) and surrounded the home and began negotiating with Couturiaux for his surrender. After what deputies characterized as “a lengthy period of time,” Couturiaux and another person inside the home surrendered.
The second person in the residence was identified as Rebecca Smith, 56, of Wheatfield.
Couturiaux and Smith were charged with second-degree obstructing governmental administration. Smith was released from custody on an appearance ticket.
Couturiaux was taken to the Niagara County jail to be arraigned and faces an extradition hearing on the Florida arrest warrants.
