Gloucester’s own Mark Turner is officially back on top as the men’s club champion at Bass Rocks Golf Club.
After having the title snatched from his grasp by a single stroke last summer by former GHS standout Josh Salah, Turner reclaimed his crown with a 3-over par performance for the three-day event. That included a 1-under 68 to kick things off on Friday, as well as consecutive 71s to close things out over the weekend.
Turner’s triumphant outing was six shots better than runner-up Salah, who had fired the tournament’s second best round with an even par 69 on Friday. Colby Mitchell rounded out the top three with a 72-76-69—217 (+10) showing.
“It’s the most fun weekend of the year for us. Bass Rocks has an incredible group of talented golfers and it’s just fun to be out there and compete with them all,” said Turner, who previously starred at St. John’s Prep and Dartmouth College. “The group grows every year and I was lucky enough to come out on top.”
Turner is now a five-time club champion, having also won the award in 2017, 2019, 2023 and 2024.
In the ladies’ club championship, Janet Powers secured the victory by finishing strong with an 81 on Sunday, by far her best round of the weekend. Powers closed with a gross total of 265 after carding 91 and 93 on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Kathy Bertagna wasn’t far behind at 268 (93-82-93).
Steven Salah was the Senior Trophy winner (golfers 50 years and older). He carded rounds of 80, 76 and 72 to finish at 228 (+21), which was also good for a tie in sixth place overall on the men’s side.
In the stableford points scoring flighted tournament fields, John Doyle took home the Gillis trophy with 82 total points across his three rounds (22-34-26). The Bohan trophy, which used net stableford scoring, went to Patrick Salony (38-34-29—101), while Patrick Thorpe won the Bishop Trophy (42-35-34—111).
In the net stableford ladies’ flighted championship, Barba Moody impressed with 108 total points (32-35-41) to take home first place. And finally, earning the Bass Rocks Trophy, which included golfers in the 7-10 handicap range, Steve Paccone won with a 237 total gross, firing rounds of 81-77-79 (+30).
