BOYS SOCCER
St. John’s Prep 6, Xaverian 0: The Eagles captured their fourth consecutive Catholic Conference title as sophomore Emmitt Massaro’s first two varsity goals highlighted the victory. JJ Koulalis bagged the eventual game-winner for the top ranked Eagles (now 11-1-2), with Finn McCabe, Garrison Murphy and Ryan King also scoring. James Minor 92), Joe DiCesare, Owen Beeny and Noah Lear all had assists, Matt Droggitis picked up his 10th shutout, and Ryan Levis, Josh Githinji and Andrew Wewnzil all played strong games defensively.
Hamilton-Wenham 2, Ipswich 2: The first career goals for both Olivier Cullen and Omar Ramirez allowed the Tigers (5-4-6) to stage a second half rally and earn a road tie against the arch rivals. Luke Niederhelmen and Callum Scholfield had the assists for Ipswich, which also got great efforts from goalie Finn Wright, Jack Hickox, Aiden Chinn, Michael Queen, Malcolm Joss-Green and Noah Gallegos.
Nick Stein converted a pass from Rory Taylor in the first half, then scored again off a long distance free kick before intermission to give the host Generals (10-1-2) an early two-goal lead. Jack Araneo and Dylan Harper also played for Hamilton-Wenham.
Newburyport 2, Essex Tech 0: The Hawks got strong play from midfielder Eliabe Neves and defenders Jaxon Shoch and Ty Morley.
GIRLS SOCCER
Hamilton-Wenham 3, Ipswich 0: Senior midfielder Savannah Gauron scored a pair of goals and freshman Elyn Wood scored her first on the varsity with a long arching shot as the Generals (11-0-2) remained unbeaten on the season. Lilly Giovannucci had two assists for H-W while sophomore Ella Zacharias had one. Senior Maddie Grader had an excellent second half for the Generals and junior Layla Yankee preserved the shutout in goal.
Bishop Fenwick 2, Archbishop Williams 1: The Crusaders (6-4-2) took another step towards cementing their spot in the state tournament with a one goal win.
FIELD HOCKEY
Masconomet 6, Peabody 1: In a show of great sportsmanship, Masconomet captain Emma Campagna, who had her season cut short due to an ACL tear, scored her first varsity goal after fellow captain Savannah Stevens brought the ball downfield, allowing Campagna tip it home. Fellow senior Alana Vaz also scored her first goal, this one coming off an offensive corner. Ava Gauvain added three scores and Maddy Regan one, with Mia Marques, Genevieve Clapp, Ella Mossey, Regan and Stevens adding assists. Backup goalie Christina Connelly made two saves on three shots after relieving starter Sabrina Cafarelli.
Beverly 2, Marblehead 1: Fiona Bazin and Madz LeBlanc knocked home goals for the winners while netminder Charlotte Stevens stopped 12 shots to give the Panthers (9-4-1) a close victory. LeBlanc, whose tally came off a reverse, also assisted on Bazin’s lamplighter.
Sadie Beane had an unassisted third period goal for the Magicians (7-5-2), with goaltender Elizabeth Hayes stopping a dozen shots. Avery Wysor added a defensive save and played well along with teammate Paige Waldman.
Saugus 1, Danvers 0: The Falcons (3-9-2) suffered a heartbreaking loss, allowing a goal on the only shot Saugus put on net. Danvers had possession for three quarters of the afternoon and had 11 corners, but couldn’t slip a shot into the net. Seniors Callie Trail and Ava Patch had strong games for the Blue-and-White.
Gloucester 1, Swampscott 0: Lilah Caplan turned aside 13 shots in net for the Big Blue (5-6-2) in a home game under the lights.
Bishop Stang 2, Bishop Fenwick 0: Goalie Sarah Bannister had one of her best games of the season, finishing with 20 saves for Fenwick (4-10-1). Midfielders Mia Millett and Sophia Cooke also turned in strong showings for the Crusaders.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Bishop Fenwick 17, Arlington Catholic 41: The Crusaders captured the top three spots on Senior Day as Adelaide Sweatman (20:16), Marianna Kay (20:30) and Olivia Rowe (21:19) led the way to victory. Fenwick (now 5-1) had nine of the top 10 finishers, with Julia Davis fifth (22:29), Kayla Antico sixth (22:37), Caroline Blatchford seventh, Mireille Climenson eighth, Katie Kelley ninth and Isabella Santoro 10th.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Bishop Fenwick 19 Arlington Catholic 41: Sam Appleyard (18:24), John Reilly (18:55) and Deven Dion (19:13) went 1-2-3 as the Crusaders breezed on Senior Day. Others placing in the top 10 were Michael Mazzarella, Nondas Lagonakis, Jackson Faitella and Liam Sullivan for Bishop Fenwick, which finished the dual meet season with a 4-2 mark.
VOLLEYBALL
Beverly 3, Ipswich 2: Senior captain and outside hitter Reese Kwiatek recorded her 200th career kill as the Panthers (now 7-9) rallied to take down the four-time defending state champion Tigers, 25-13, 24-26, 23-25, 25-22, 15-12. Middle blocker Riley MacDonald added six kills and fellow sophomore Thea Pisani-Gross recorded eight aces for Beverly.
Peabody 3, Swampscott 1: On an evening where the Tanners celebrated their seven seniors — Lizzy Bettencourt, Sophia Coburn, Yorna Demiri, Sydney Lynch, Matilda Olowu, Camila Quezada and Alyssa Zito — they prevailed in four sets to improve to 9-7.
Seniors Eli Young (11 kills), captain Lila Paster (10 kills, 2 blocks), Hayden Haskell (12 digs) and Caitlin Cauley (17 digs, 1 ace, 1 kill) all turned in stellar performances for the 10-5 Big Blue.
Bishop Fenwick, Malden Catholic 0: Outside hitter Charlotte Spooner, a senior captain, had a terrific evening with eight kills, 14 digs and five aces to send Fenwick to a 25-19, 25-18, 25-21 sweep. Another team captain, middle hitter Kylie Murphy, finished with eight aces, five kills and four blocks for the winners, who also got 15 digs from Elizabeth Dumas plus 15 assists and eight digs from senior captain Emme Lubas.
Essex Tech 3, Georgetown 0: Freshman Ava Newbury helped the Hawks control the pace by handing out eight assists and junior Shelby Addario played well with three assists and five aces. Sophomore Lavinya Oliveira had a good game as well with three kills, six aces and five digs.
Hamilton-Wenham 3, Triton 1: Junior Garyson Folger had a coming out party with a career-best 18 assists and the Generals (7-8) won 23-25, 26-24, 25-14, 25-13. Junior Charlotte Maunsell had seven kills, five digs, three aces and two blocks from the right side while sophomore Molly Bransford had seven kills with a high hitting percentage. Junior Abby Norris shined defensively with a team high 19 digs and fellow junior Sofie Green closed out the game with her stellar serve receive.
MEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER
Western New England 1, Endicott 0: Despite getting four saves from goalkeeper Ethan Harrison, the Gulls could only put one shot of their own on the WNE cage and fell to 6-5-2 overall.
Gordon 3, Wentworth 0: Benny Simpson tallied up a goal and an assist to help the Fighting Scots improve to 8-4-2 with another conference win.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER
Gordon 2, Wentworth 2: Second half tallies by Tia Fyden (her 3rd of the season) and Eowyn Lapp (her team-leading 14th) enabled the Scots to earn a home tie. Ava Forbes-Smith, Sophie Lyons and Lapp all added assists for Gordon (now 4-8-2).
COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY
Bridgewater State 6, Salem State 0: The Vikings fell to 5-7 on the season despite getting 15 saves from goaltender Issy Mosley.
