St. John’s Prep second at Division 1 states: At The Ridge Club in Sandwich, the Eagles finished second at the Division 1 state championships after shooting a plus-36 320, seven shots behind their Catholic Conference rivals from BC High.
Jack Carew paced the Eagles individually with a 7-over par 78, including a pair of birdies, to finish in a tie for ninth place individually. Jack Moriarty was next with 80, good for 16th place, followed by matching 81s from AJ Bodnar and Cole Cullen, which earned them ties for 19th overall.
Beverly golfers shine: The two individual qualifiers for the Panthers at the D1 state championship placed in the top half of the field of 95. Ryan Barron shot an 85 with one birdie and four pars over the 18 holes, tied for 42nd place. Tyler Chin-Aleong shot an 86 and made six pars.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
St. John’s Prep wins league title: Led by Jack McIntosh’s third place finish at 15:27 over the 5K course at the Wrentham Developmental Center, the Eagles won the Catholic Conference title with a low score of 29 points, eight better than second place BC High. Other excellent performances for St. John’s Prep were turned in by Liam Mahoney (4th, 15:47), Henry McConnell (5th, 15:48), Leo Seltenrich (6th, 15:49), Liam Callahan (11th, 16:05), Sam Valentine (13th, 16:24) and Hunter Opal (14th, 16:28).
Peabody 28, Masconomet 28 (Peabody wins on tiebreaker): The Tanners finished the dual meet season at 6-0 as Northeastern Conference Dunn champs via the sixth runner tiebreaker, with six boys finishing in the Top 10. Mohamen Lhassouani won the race with Matt McCusker in fifth, Luke Murphy sixth, Osama Mishal seventh, Jackson Guerriero ninth, Aidan Trainor tenth and Logan George also running a strong race.
Senior captain Owen Walsh’s second place time of 16:45 was a personal best for Masconomet (5-2). Junior Conall Strangman tied his own PB (16:56) to place third overall, with classmate Zander Hamlin taking fourth (16:59). Another junior, Duncan Cullinane, set a PB (17;22) while finishing eighth.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Peabody 25, Masconomet 30: The Tanners placed five runners in the top ten to finish the dual meet season 6-1, led by Lauren Foley in second place overall. Ella Braz followed in third with Lily Murphy (fifth), Maya Sutton (sixth) and CeCe Toda (ninth) all scoring for Peabody.
GIRLS SOCCER
Beverly 2, Acton-Boxboro 0: Sasha Miller sent a deep shot home in the first half and Olivia Anketell scored off a cross from Jaydin Simpson in the second as the Panthers moved to 12-4-2. Clara Kosto recorded another shutout with four saves and the midfield of Ella Heckman, Avery Fogarty, Genevieve Bilotti and Grace Williams were excellent.
Hamilton-Wenham 3, North Reading 3: Savannah Gauron scored her 17th and 18th goals of the season but the Generals (12-0-3) had to settle for a draw when the Hornets scored with seven minutes to go. Margot Bryce Morris also scored, assisted by Gauron, and Dusty Romiza and Violet Acheson added assists. Emma Hughes had a monster game in the middle, along with Romiza, while Evie Bernard was excellent defensively and goalie Olive Bevilaqua delivered a superb effort.
BOYS SOCCER
Peabody 4, Haverhill 3: After trailing 3-0, the Tanners stormed back with goals by two goals Marc Smith, who also assisted on one with Marques Pirrotta’s two goals including the game-winner. Jason Decost, Jayden Lopez and Diego Lemas also had strong games for Peabody.
Ipswich 2, Pentucket 1: The Tigers (7-4-6) picked up a CAL win behind goals from Matthew Gouzie and Omar Ramirez. Assists went to Gouzie and Michael Queen, while keeper Finn Wright made a couple of great saves to help preserve the win.
Rockport 4, Essex Tech 1: In a game where four red cards were handed out, the Hawks (4-10-3) scored two minutes in but couldn’t muster another tally in a road setback under the lights.
FIELD HOCKEY
Gloucester 3, Marblehead 0: Several solid chances offensively went by the wayside thanks to Gloucester’s defense as the Magicians fell to 7-7-3 with one regular season to play. Goalkeeper Elizabeth Hayes had another solid outing, making 11 saves for MHS, working with her own defense to shut out the Fishermen in the second half.
Bedford 6, Bishop Fenwick 2: Despite a goal and an assist from senior captain Shea Mason, the Crusaders couldn’t keep up with the Bucs offensively. Sophomore Bella McCormack also scored for Fenwick (now 4-12-1), with freshman Reese Robillard picking up an assist. Mia Millett played well at the midfield, as did Bailey Chalmers on defense in front of goaltender Sarah Bannister (7 saves).
VOLLEYBALL
Salem 3, Lynn English 0: Senior captain Mia Silva had 23 assists and six aces and the Witches officially clinched the program’s first state tournament berth since 2013. Senior Aniya King led the offense with eight kills plus four aces, sophomore Jenna Phelps had five kills with two blocks and senior captain Annie Thornett had 12 digs with three aces.
Marblehead 3, Danvers 0: Greta Sachs had nine kills and the Magicians (15-2) extended their winning streak with a 25-6, 25-17, 25-16 win. Lila Moniz and Mari Modrzynksa added four kills each while Eva Burke handed out 22 assists with six aces. Sydney Faris led the way from the line, serving seven aces with 10 digs.
Cardinal Spellman 3, Bishop Fenwick 1: Emme Lubas had a busy night with 45 assists but the Crusaders (8-10) fell 24-26, 13-25, 25-22, 11-25. Kylie Murphy had a great game with 15 kills and eight blocks, Charlotte Spooner had 10 kills and six aces, Elizabeth Dumas had 22 digs and Caitlyn Boyle totaled up five blocks.
Peabody 3, Beverly 1: The Tanners improved to 12-7 with a quality NEC win over Beverly.
Essex Tech 3, Medford 1: Sophomore Lavinya Oliveira had 15 kills, an incredible 37 digs and three aces and the Hawks improved to 11-9. Devyn Stapleton was also strong offensively with nine kills and a block while freshman Ava Newbury had 21 assists and junior Sadie Souza handed out 11. Defensively, senior Chloe Mcgillivary had 30 digs and senior Neisha Matos had 33.
Masconomet 3, Ipswich 2: After dropping the first two sets, the Chieftains rallied behind senior captain Cate Wettstone with 20 kills, three blocks and three aces. Fellow captain Lidia Benedetto has six aces while senior Elise Clapp had 10 aces as well.
Swampscott 3, Malden Catholic 0: The Big Blue rolled, 25-216, 25-23, 25-20, as sophomore Dana Bereznyakov finished with six aces, three digs and five assists. Senior captain Reese Schailberger also had a big night with 14 assists and a trio of kills for Swampscott (now 13-5).
COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY
Fitchburg State 1, Salem State 0: Izzy Mosley finished with a half-dozen saves for the Vikings (now 5-9), with Mikayla Talbot having four of SSU’s seven shots on the Fitchburg cage.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE TENNIS
UMass Dartmouth 4, Salem State 2: In the opening round of the Little East playoffs, the Vikings won the doubles point but Ryann Tripp delivered the only triumph in singles play
Endicott 7, UNE 0: The Gulls (6-5) climbed over .500 with wins by Abbey Fleming (6-1, 6-2), Nadia Uzelac (6-0, 6-0) and Julia Rockler (6-4, 6-0) as well as Jillian Friedman (6-2, 6-3), Caroline Sutliffe (6-3, 6-2) and Emily Leclerc (3-6, 6-2, 10-5).
WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER
Salem State 3, Fisher 1: Anna Frost had a goal and an assist and Danvers native Krysta Zamejtis also scored to send the Vikings to victory.
