GIRLS BASKETBALL
Peabody 52, Masconomet 47: The Tanners (9-5) led by 15 at halftime and enjoyed a 17-8 second quarter run before holding off the rival Chieftains. Olivia Gaynor’s 16 points sparked Peabody while Avery Bettencourt scored nine and Ava Ryan had eight. Lizzy Bettencourt (eight rebounds, two blocks) and Sophia Coburn (five boards, four blocks) helped Peabody control the paint and Aliana Ryan was clutch handling the ball.
Sami Lalikos scored 21 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to help spark Masconomet (7-6) while Shaye Vella scored 16 and Sabrina Cafarelli chipped in seven.
Marblehead 51, Beverly 46: Tess Andriano scored 20 points and the Magicians (7-5) came alive in the second half with 29 points to rally from nine down and win on the road. Andriano grabbed 10 rebounds while Nora Mahan scored 15 (including five 3’s), Greta Sachs scored six and big free throws by Lucy MacDonald helped hold off the Panthers. Ainsley MacDonald, Hailey Schmitt and Carys Moran also helped lead the charge.
Infinity Burns led the Panthers (3-11) by scoring 15 points with 17 rebounds and two steals. Clara Kostro also played well with 14 points.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Beverly 61, Marblehead 28: Senior captain Jacob Klass had 26 points and the Panthers (now 10-3) turned in a lockdown defensive performance on the road. Andrew Braganca added a dozen points for Beverly and senior captain Danny Pierce also scored 10. Eli Landman, a junior, starred on defense in the victory as well.
The Magicians (8-4) were paced by Cameron Weaver with eight points.
Xaverian 69, St. John’s Prep 45: The Eagles (now 2-11) were felled by their Catholic Conference goes on the road.
SWIMMING
Marblehead 89, Salem 78: Grant Dwyer of Salem was his usual dominant self by taking first place in both the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, but the Magicians used their team strength and a few more state and sectional qualifying times to prevail in the pool. Marblehead will return home Thursday to host Swampscott on Senior Night.
