GIRLS BASKETBALL
Peabody 68, Gloucester 38: The Tanners (10-5) celebrated their four seniors Olivia Gaynor, Aliana Ryan, Lizzy Bettencourt and Sophia Coburn by officially qualifying for the Division 1 state playoffs and getting head coach Stan McKeen his 150th win as hoops coach.
Gaynor led 11 different scorers with 15 points, Avery Bettencourt had 13 with six steals and Ava Ryan scored nine with three thefts. Olivia Ball, Taylor King, Jayda Nagle and Brielle Broughton also shined for the Tanners.
Marblehead 46, Salem 23: A well-balanced effort led the Magicians (9-6) to victory on Senior Night as Sammy Walker and Greta Sachs scored seven each and senior captain Samara Dosch gave Marblehead a lift in her return from injury.
Salem’s Michaela Medina led all scorers with 14 points.
Swampscott 53, Beverly 51: Sophomore Anna Kanders went off for 28 points and the Big Blue (11-4) won their sixth in a row by digging in defensively on the last few possessions. Junior Cecilia Tripp added 10 points and senior Maddie Lilley was huge on the glass with eight rebounds.
Riley MacDonald and Marisa Hutton both scored 15 points for Beverly (3-13) and Kayla Everett added 10 points.
Lynnfield 47, Essex Tech 37: The Hawks were defeated despite some solid efforts including ten points from Lecia Browne, six each from Avery Barteaux and Mia Martinez and seven from Maria Bravim.
Masconomet 43, Winthrop 27: Holding Winthrop to single digits in points in three of the four quarters was the key for the Chieftains, who improved to 9-6. Shaye Vella had an outstanding game with 13 points and four steals, Sami Lalikos scored seven with 15 rebounds and Sadie Morris also grabbed 11 boards while scoring six points.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Salem 69, Marblehead 54: Junior captain Elian Rodriguez scored 26 points while going a perfect 5-for-5 at the line and handing out six assists to help the Witches (13-1) remain unbeaten against in state competition. Captain Nate Lane had 16 points, three assists and three steals in a great outing, Sean Murphy chipped in with 11 points off the bench and freshman Cleto Deng had a team-best seven rebounds.
Manchester Essex 52, Ipswich 51: It was a heartbreaker for Ipswich (8-7) at home as ME’s Zach Hurd made the go-ahead layup with 15 seconds to play. Tanner Manning led all Ipswich scorers with 13 points while Rex Satter scored 10 along with five assists. The Tigers led by as many as ten after a 23-7 second quarter run and it was all even (42-42) after three.
Masconomet 74, Winthrop 43: Jamason Vella had 24 points including a dunk to lead the Chieftains (12-1). Jimmy Farrell added ten points while Danny Karas, Colin Doherty and Benjamin Linehan all had six by making a pair of treys each.
St. John’s Shrewsbury 52, St. John’s Prep 43: The Eagles battled hard on their home floor but fell in Catholic Conference action.
Lynnfield 83, Bishop Fenwick 67: Damon Mataragas led the Crusaders with 27 points and Vince Finnochio scored 16 points.
BOYS SKIING
Prep wins pair: Owen McLain’s 22.90 time helped St. John’s Prep dominate North Andover (107-28) and Haverhill (110.5-24.5). Also having strong runs were Victor Barnas (23.88) and Andrew Pellegrini (24.67).
Masconomet sweeps: The Chieftains downed Manchetser Essex (80.5-54.5) and Newburyport (78-57) at Bradford. David Palmer had Masconomet’s best time at 23.49 while Nolan Zamagni and Ben Gauvin also raced well.
Generals split: The 23.59 time turned in by Colin McCaughey was one of the best of the day and Hamilton-Wenham defeated Andover (78-57) while also falling to Manchester Essex (76-59). Sawyer Hancock and Will Totten also skied well for H-W.
GYMNASTICS
Beverly sweeps Peabody, Salem: Behind another all-around winning performance by Carli Moran (37.65), the Panthers took care of business Monday night against both Salem and Peabody, finishing with 133.55 points to the Witches’ 101.5 and Peabody’s 84.9. Moran won the vault (8.5), uneven bars (9.7), balance beam (9.0) and floor exercises (9.45).
Senior Olivia Durand placed second on floor (8.1) and was third on vault (8.4); Panther teammate Fiona Bazin was second on vault (9.1) and third on bars (7.4) while taking second in the all-around (31.2). Maddy St. Pierre added a second on bars (8.4), as did Lily Pelletier on beam (8.0), with third place finishes turned in by Savannah Hathaway on floor (8.0) and Tilly Mandelbaum on beam (7.9). Beverly seniors Emma Reilly (7.2 on floor, 6.8 on bars), Nina Orlando (6.7 on bars, 6.2 on beam) and Hathaway (6.7 on beam) all shined in their final home meet.
GIRLS TRACK
Three gold for Fenwick: At the Catholic Central League championship, Julia Davis won the 600 in 1:43 and Marianna Kay won the 2-mile in 11:56, then those two teamed with Olivia Rowe and Addie Sweatman to win the 4×800 relay. Also scoring for the Crusaders were Sweatman (third, mile), Rowe (third, 100), Katie Cunha (sixth, hurdles) and Mieielle Climenson (fourth, 2-mile).
BOYS TRACK
Crusaders shine: Nondas Lagonakis placed third in the shot put and fifth in the long jump to highlight things for the Crusaders boys at the CCL championship meet. Fenwick’s 4×800 relay took second overall, Chris Kay placed fifth in the 600 and John Reilly posted a fifth in the 1000.
WRESTLING
Five go unbeaten for SJP: At the recent Commonwealth Cup, St. John’s Prep took care of business vs. Framingham (69-5) but lost to the state’s top ranked team, Central Catholic (49-23). Sam Josey beat the No. 2 ranked wrestler in New England, Caden Chase, from Central at 190 pounds to highlight the performance; he went unbeaten on the day along with teammates Jordan Reis (113 lbs.), Boden Dormer (138), Jimmy Lally (144) and Will Lavallee (150).
GIRLS HOCKEY
Beverly 6, Stoneham 1: Senior Meredith Johnston had a hat trick for the third consecutive game and the Panthers (13-3) celebrated Senior Night at Bourque Arena with their fifth straight victory. Senior Ashley Freitas and Morgan Linskey posted assists while fellow 12th graders Ava Pinto, Addi Sheppard, Kirsten Cole and Meg Ryan all played well. Other goal scorers were Zoie Abell and Mia Dugdale.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Endicott 60, Roger Williams 50: Aleah Bracey scored 21 points and the Gulls (13-7) led most of the way to move to 9-2 in league play. Tenley Wallin added 11 for Endicott.
UNE 60, Gordon 45: Leah McGarvey led Gordon (4-16) with 14 points and Isabella Rivera also scored 11.
MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
UNE 93, Gordon 91: Ryan Brooks scored 24 points and Alex Daniel totaled 22 to pace the Scots (6-13), who got within two points on a Brooks three in the final seconds and couldn’t steal the ball back for a look at the tying shot.
Endicott 84, UNE 83: Marcus Montangino made a 29-footer as time expired to lift the nationally ranked Gulls to a miracle comeback win. Endicott trailed by six with 2:17 to and by four with 44 seconds left and Montangino (29 points) made a pair of free throws with 44 seconds to go to make it close. Matt Boen added 17 and Cadne Sullivan added 16.
