GIRLS SOCCER
Hamilton-Wenham 2, Lynnfield 1: In a battle of CAL unbeatens and rematch of last year’s state semifinals, the Generals defense of Evie Bernard, Emmy Pitkin and Elyn Wood won the day and keeper Oliva Bevilacqua made seven saves. Junior Brynn Fall put home Ainsley Macdougall’s deflection for H-W’s first goal of the afternoon and freshman Alex Capuano netted her first varsity goal assisted by Dusty Romiza. The Generals are now 4-0-1.
Essex Tech 1, Georgetown 1: Megan Downing cleaned up the rebound of a penalty kick midway through the second half and Vittoria Valentine made 13 saves in a brilliant effort as the Hawks improved to 3-1.1 Makayla Downing, Julia Kalliandis, Chloe Silva and Lucy Gaddis all played well for Essex Tech, which was under a minute away from the win when the Royals were awarded a PK that they converted for the tie.
Newburyport 5, Ipswich 0: The Tigers (1-3-1) took their second straight shutout loss.
Boston Trinity Academy 2, Waring 0: Finley Chisholm had a great game at center midfield in the Wolfpack’s season opening defeat.
GOLF
Masconomet 62, Peabody 10: Junior Cooper Wassung nailed an eagle on the ninth hole at Ferncroft to complete a three-under par round of 33 and lead the Chieftains (3-0-1). Brendan Sheehan shot even par 36 and other match winners were Blake Ditchfield, Charlotte Rollins, Brendan O’Connor, Hayes Maher and Nolan Zamagni. Tristan Joyce was a winner in the No. 1 slot for Peabody.
Essex Tech 195, Hamilton-Wenham 190: Ryan Skerry had a huge round for the Hawks with 40 points while Emmett Snyder added 36 and Landon Pelletier chipped in with 34.
Swampscott 54, Salem 18: Tyler Ostroff carded a 2-under 32 to lead the victorious Big Blue at Tedesco while Sam Schepens shot 34, Luke McGonagle shot 37 and Mike Collins came in with a 38. For Salem, A.J. Alessi won his match (5.5-3.5) and Matthew Kenney, Aaron Babb and Thatcher Race all played well.
Ipswich 160, Lynnfield 138: Louie Harrington and Will Totten had 29 points each and Charlie Pezza added 28 as the Tigers improved to 4-2 with a CAL triumph.
Marblehead 46, Danvers 26: Ty Forbes, Greyson Leventhal and Colby Moore all shot 39 to lead the Magicians (7-1-1), who got additional match wins from Max King, Will Macrina, Joy Meshulam and Ted Dulac.
St. John’s Prep 226, BC High 241: The Eagles went out to Wollaston Country Club and came home with a victory over their Catholic Conference counterparts.
VOLLEYBALL
Bishop Fenwick 3, Bishop Stang 0: Caitlin Boyle and Anna Diranian had six kills each and the Crusaders picked up their second win in 24 hours with a 25-21, 25-19, 25-18 sweep. Emma Lubas handed out 25 assists while Charlotte Spooner had five kills, five aces and 10 digs. Elizabeth Dumas chipped in 12 dis and Kylie Murphy served superbly with 10 aces alongside five kills and three solo blocks.
Essex Tech 3, Georgetown 0: Seniors Niesha Matos (6 kills, 5 aces) and Devyn Stapleton (5 kills) both had strong outings for the Hawks in their three-game sweep. Sophomore outside hitters Maria Bravim (6 kills, 7 digs) and Lavinya Olivera (7 aces, 11 digs) also excelled, as did freshman setter Ava Newbury (13 assists), with juniors Sadie Souza and Shelby Addario adding nine and eight assists, respectively.
Newburyport 3, Hamilton-Wenham 0: Junior Abby Norris led the Generals (3-3) with seven kills, seven digs and an ace. Sophomores Mary Thompson and Lilly Guittarr also played well in terms of serve receive and defense.
FIELD HOCKEY
Beverly 6, Marblehead 2: Senior captain Lily Scotti had a hat trick as the Panthers (3-2-1) knocked off the Magicians on the road. Fiona Bazin dished out three assists for the winners, who also got single goals from Avery LeBlanc (assisted by her sister, Madz LeBlanc), Gwen Jones and Morgan Linskey. Ashley Wallace and Jones each chipped in one assist, and goalies Charlotte Stevens and, in her first varsity action, freshman Lauren Conant, each finished with one save.
Layla Dulac scored both goals for Marblehead (now 3-2-1), with Zoe Dwyer assisting on the first of those. Elizabeth Hayes was busy in net, making eight saves, w hile the trio of Meggie Grenier, Paige Waldman and Kate Andriano were key communications in the backfield.
Danvers 4, Saugus 0: Senior Molly Verhoosky made two saves for her first varsity shutout and junior Kyla Moroney scored her first varsity hat trick to propel the Falcons (1-4-1) to their first win. Addie Moore had a goal and assist for the Blue-and-White, with Audrey Silva and Liv Henry earning assists. Moroney and Henry helped make things happen by controlling the play while defender Libby Sher also had a great game.
Bishop Fenwick 8, Northeast 0: Alex Kohalmi had a pair of goals and one assist while Reese Robillard netted her first varsity goal as the Crusaders (2-3-1) rolled to victory. Sophie Cooke, Shea Mason, Bella McCormack, Maya Haddock and Shayna Rowen add added one goal each, while goalie Sarah Bannister (1 save) earned her first career shutout while splitting time in net with Ginny Cahill.
Gloucester 4, Swampscott 1: Lilah Caplan made four saves and Lila Girard scored the lone goal for the Big Blue.
BOYS SOCCER
St. John’s Prep 1, BC High 1: Garrison Murphy, an Eagles’ senior, scored on a header off a corner kick from classmate Ryan King in a road stalemate. Senior center backs James Minor and Ryan Levis also played well for St. John’s Prep (now 4-0-2, 2-0-1 in the Catholic Conference).
Georgetown 2, Essex Tech 0: The Hawks were blanked under the lights at home.
Lynnfield 2, Hamilton-Wenham 1: Gus Tratnyak slid across to finish off a pass from Nick Stein in a highlight goal for the Generals, who played well all-around against a quality opponent. Owen Waddell and Dylan Harer also played well for H-W.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Fenwick wins two: The Crusaders shaded rival St. Mary’s (24-31) and downed Spellman (15-50) led by Marianna Kay and Adelaide Sweatman, who each tied for second place overall. Olivia Rowe, Julia Davis and Caroline Blatchford also ran well for Fenwick.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Crusaders cruise: Co-captain Sam Appleyard won the race in a personal best 17:41 and Bishop Fenwick downed both St. Mary’s (24-32) and Cardinal Spellman (24-35). Freshman Deven Dion had a tremendous effort to finish fourth while Doron Appleyard was fifth, John Reilly was sixth and sophomore Chris Kay decided the races by finishing eighth.
BC High 19, St. John’s Prep 36; Jack McIntosh was the top finisher for the Eagles (16:49) over the 5K course at Franklin Park, followed by Leo Seltenrich in sixth place (16:59), Liam Mahoney in seventh (17:02), Hunter Opal in ninth (17:12) and Liam Callahan in 10th (17:15).
COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY
Salem State 6, Anna Maria 3: Danvers native Grace Morey had a hat trick as the Vikings (2-2) doubled up the opposition. Peabody’s Siobhan Smith also had a strong game with a goal and an assist and Makayla Talbot scored twice.
MEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER
Emerson 2, Gordon 0: The Scots (3-2-1) put eight shots on frame but couldn’t get one to go home. Gordon keepers Isaiah Diaz and Landen Lonesky each made one save in each half.
Kenne St. 2, Endicott 1: Fisher Mills put the Gulls on the board in the first half but Kenne netted a pair in the second half to send Endicott home with a narrow defeat.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE TENNIS
Endicott 7, Suffolk 0: The Gulls blanked the Rams in their fall conference opener behind strong performances by the doubles teams of Nadia Uzelac/Jillian Friedman, Emily Leclerc/Samantha Hartmann and Abbey Fleming/Julia Rockler. Friedman, Uzelac, Leclerc and Fleming then added straight set singles wins.
Gordon 7, UNE 0: The Scots took every match in straight sets with the singles winners being Lucille Belval, Serena Ross, Chloe Hanley, Mikayla Otey, Amanda Kim and Gianna Hallam.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER
Endicott 0, Babson 0: Amanda Cosgrove made three saves and the Gulls (2-4-1) grabbed a hard fought road point.
Tufts 2, Gordon 1: The nationally ranked Jumbos broke a tie in the 70th minute to topple visiting Gordon (2-4). Eowyn Lapp scored her fourth goal of the season for the Scots in the 59th minute of playing, tying the contest at 1-1. Goalkeeper Emily Bengston finished with five saves in net for the locals.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL
Springfield 3, Endicott 0: Ava Grace Dresback was in double figures for kills with 14 but the Gulls (5-2) were felled in three sets at home.
Gordon 3, Wellesley 1: Haley Hutzler had 21 kills along with 14 digs and the Fighting Scots improved to 8-3 on the young season. Annika Schmitt also had an excellent night with 39 assists and Annie Zimmerman had nine kills and a pair of aces.
University of New England 3, Salem State 0: Presley Shairs had six kills and Celia Carbone handed out 15 assists but the Vikings were swept on the road in Maine.
