BASEBALL
Peabody 8, Salem 0: Lefthander Cam Connolly spun a no-hitter and struck out 11 batters as the Tanners (14-2) made it 11 straight wins at Gallows Hill Park. Connolly walked three and was supported with big offense by fellow captain Josh Sigmon (2-for-4, RBI), junior Jayden Cunningham (2 RBI) and Reymi Andino (run, RBI). Mike Petro and Jarie Tolentino also hit hits for the winners while Riley Fenerty threw 4 2/3 solid frames for Salem (now 5-8).
Marblehead 5, Beverly 0: Senior captain Brooks Keefe had a two out, two-run single in the sixth to help the Magicians (11-5) push across three insurance runs to expand their 1-0 lead. Fellow captain Chris Cannuscio pitched very well over six innings to earn another win while Stef Shepard and Charlie Sachs had other RBI. Beverly (4-12) was led by captain Mike Giello with a pair of hits.
Hamilton-Wenham 13, Amesbury 3: Gian Gamelli hit a home run and had four RBI in a 3-for-4 day and the Generals (10-5) officially qualified for the playoffs. Caden Schrock also went 3-for-4 with four RBI, Alec Cote blasted a home run and Cormac Heney had two hits while striking out seven in the victory on the mound.
Georgetown 7, Ipswich 0: Ethan Hanson’s second inning single was the only hit of the day for the Tigers (5-11) against the unbeaten Royals. Drew Lane pitched well for Ipswich, striking out eight in five innings of work.
Newburyport 5, Essex Tech 1: Danny Greenfield, Xavier Parsons and Cole Waterman had two hits apiece for the Hawks (1-15) on the road outing.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Salem 8, Gloucester 2: Eighth graders Isla Heppner, Lorelei Fraone, Jackie Fritz and Leah De la Rosa led an outstanding defensive effort to propel the Witches to victory. Mackenzie Eichel scored three goals to power the offense, with Kailyn Ricciarelli adding two tallies. Goaltender Mari Diaz made 10 saves in the win for Salem (now 4-11).
Ipswich 20, Lynnfield 13: Allie Wile scored five times with two assists and Tiger teammates Estelle Gromko and Halle Greenleaf both had three goals and three assists to help their team improve to 10-1. Lyla Greenleaf (assist) and Ella Stein also had three goals, with Lucy Winthrop (2) and Jayne Krause (1) also scoring.
Swampscott 17, Saugus 3: Cecilia Tripp and Avery Laundry (assist) each found the back of the net three times while teammates Mia Dahlman (2 assists), Victoria Pierro (assist) and Coco Clopton added two goals each as the Big Blue improved to 10-2. Fiona Keaney (2 assists), Audrey Heath (assist), Lila Giard (assist), Caroline Reen, Lia Beatrice and Sophia Cicotti also had single goals, with Lilah Caplan making seven saves in net.
Manchester Essex 12, Hamilton-Wenham 8: Under tight defensive scrutiny, Evie Bernard still managed four goals, one assist, seven draw controls and three ground balls for H-W (now 7-5). Maisie Leland and Laura Sabo each had two goals, Hannah Ciriello had one assist, and defenders Sophie Happel, Ava Shultz, Lucy Ayers and Maddie Graber all played well in front of goaltender Ava Vautour (8 saves).
Waring 9, Brimmer 8: The Wolfpack clawed their way to their sixth win in eight games as freshman Katherine Steinmetz set up senior Eliza Loring for the game-winning goal. Senior captain Mikaila Bennett netted five goals for the winners, with Sarah Patey and Caitlyn Miller both playing well.
BOYS LACROSSE
St. John’s Prep 12, St. John’s Shrewsbury 4: Brendan Powers (3 goals), Owen White (goal) and Deuce Morton were among the top performers for the Eagles (13-2) in a true team showing. Jake Vana added a goal and three assists while Jack Doherty (plus an assist and 10-of-12 on draws), Madden McGowan, Josh Haarmann, Ben Merena, Drew Bossi, Grayson Ambrosh and Jimmy Nardone also scored. Goaltender Austin Kitces picked up his seventh win of the year, making seven saves.
Manchester Essex 16, Hamilton-Wenham 6: Senior Will Stidsen scored three times and freshman Billy Brown had three assists for the Generals (1-12). Junior Charlie Convey added two tallies, freshman Reid Faldi had one, and senior Charlie Burns picked up an assist.
Newburyport 20, Essex Tech 7: Despite a dozen saves from Damian Biersteker, the Hawks (8-5) couldn’t contain the powerful Clippers. Casey Collins, Nevin Maher, Tyler McHugh, Timmy Tavares, Mason Gadbois (2) and Fisher Gadbois had goals, with Matthew Tavares, Timmy Tavares, and the Gadbois brothers adding one assist each.
Lynnfield 9, Ipswich 6: The Tigers (8-4) dropped their third straight game after falling behind by five (6-1) at the half. Will Harrington had three goals and an assist; Finn Wright scored twice and Charlie Elder once; and Louie Harrington had one assist.
GIRLS TENNIS
Beverly 4, Lynnfield 1: The Panthers (10-3) picked up one of their most impressive wins of the season, getting a gritty win from Olivia Devereaux (7-6, 3-6, 10-3) to highlight the afternoon. Grace Adams also won in singles (6-1, 6-2), as did both doubles teams: Clea Shumria/Ella McAleer (6-4, 6-3) and Sophia Gallo/Elina Savoia (6-3, 6-4).
Hamilton-Wenham 5, Ipswich 0: The Generals improved to 11-1 after sweeping their arch rivals. Emma Jani (6-0, 6-0), Naomi Provost (6-2, 6-1) and Ellie Holbrook (6-2, 6-1) took care of business in singles action, with Sienna Gregory/Emily McIntosh (6-0 4-6, 6-1) and Maddie Minich/Angelina Meimeteas (6-4, 6-2) doing likewise in doubles.
Marblehead 5, Swampscott 0: The Magicians didn’t drop a set in climbing to 9-5 on the season. Maddie Conlon (6-2, 6-1), Aviva Bornstein (6-4, 6-0) and Sami Dosch (6-0, 6-1) prevailed in singles, as did Aoife Bresnahan/Lucia Levin (6-1, 6-3) and Reese Friedman/Iani Gilmore (6-2, 6-3) in doubles.
BOYS TENNIS
Marblehead 4, Swampscott 1: Junior captain Etan Farfel (6-1, 6-1) and sophomore TJ Kelly (7-5, 5-7, 6-4) picked up big wins at second and third singles, respectively, as the Magicians improved to 10-3. Juniors Leo Winocour and captain Jayden Janock outlasted their foes at first doubles (7-5, 7-6 (6-4), with freshman Ty Cooper and junior Austin Bacon taking second doubles (6-3, 6-1).
Chales Schepens, the first singles player for Swampscott (also 10-3), earned his team’s victory with a thorough 6-1, 6-2 triumph.
BOYS TRACK
Beverly defeats Winthrop: The Panthers ended the dual meet season with a victory as senior Harry Silva won the high hurdles, high jump and long jump. Other winners for the Orange-and-Black included senior captains Riley McGoldrick (2-mile) and Colin Burns (shot put); Christian Claiborne (400), Isaac Fryling (800), Alex Marquez (discus), Harrison Stanton (mile), and the 4×1 relay of Xavier Aux, Floyd White, Anthony Rust, and Charlie Silva.
SOFTBALL
Salem 8, Rockport 5: Annie Thornett didn’t allow an earned run and struck out eight in a complete game effort for the Witches (now 8-8). Jayla Tamilio had three hits and three RBI to pace the offense, with Skylar Sverker and Ella Wasserman each providing two hits. Kianny Mirabal-Nunez added a triple and was stellar on defense, while Liv Loux had one hit and walked three times.
Peabody 4, Danvers 1: Sophomore Lizzy Bettencourt homered while older sister Abby Bettencourt struck out 13 batters while scattering five hits and also going 3-for-4 with a double. Logan Lomasney, Kaylee DiNicola and Avery Grieco (RBI) also had hits for Peabody (10-2).
The Falcons (9-6) two hits and a run scored from senior Brea Robinson and a strong game on the mound from junior Skylar Coakley.
Hamilton-Wenham 14, Winthrop 2: Ava Day struck out eight batters and allowed three hits to pick up the win and also drove home two runs for the Generals (6-9). Viola Fazio went 2-for-3 with two RBI and three steals, Maren McCaughey scored three times and senior Bella Fazio had an RBI and scored twice. St. John’s Prep 3, Catholic Memorial 0: The Eagles (now 9-6) tallied 38 kills, 11 aces and a dozen blocks in their 25-10, 25-5, 25-18 Catholic Conference victory.
