PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Historical Association and Museum has a collection of old cook books, much loved and used as evidenced by the spatters of liquid on some of the books’ pages.
In trying to decide what Thanksgiving recipe to extract from the assortment of time-tested recipes from Plattsburgh cooks from the last two centuries, the Royal Savage Inn won out.
On Oct. 11, 1776, the American fleet was under the command of Major Gen. Benedict Arnold, and one of his ships, the Royal Savage, ran aground and was burned by the British during the “Battle of Valcour.”
For more than 80 years, North Country residents flocked to the inn of the same name, William Gilliland’s former barn that was enlarged to serve generations of locals delectable meals for every occasion from baby and bridal showers to golden anniversaries to everyday.
The Royal Savage Inn shut its doors in 2002, but post-Thanksgiving you can resurrect one of the “Choice Recipes” from The Keiths, “Turkey or Chicken Tretrazzini.”
