That would be the finishes of the Triton co-op girls swimming team at the last four Division 2 State Championship meets. So, yeah, there’s tangible proof that the Vikings continue to be an ascending program, as this year’s fifth-place finish out of 41 teams (146 points) was the program’s best showing at the State Meet in six years.
And Ava Robitaille had herself a day.
The Newburyport freshman accounted for an impressive 31 points by herself, racing to third in the 200 IM with a season-best time (2:14.48), while also taking fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:00.74). Jenna Whitaker was sixth in the 200 freestyle (2:00.35) and seventh in the 500 free (5:23.87), and similarly fellow sophomore Lyla Travers was sixth in the 500 free (5:21.28) and seventh in the 200 free (2:01.01). Then to wrap up the individual events, Allie Anderson picked up three points in the 50 free by placing 14th (25.80), and Ava Connolly made it to the second round of diving before placing 20th (207.00).
Moving on, Triton’s three relays all nearly cracked the top-10.
The Vikings’ best was the 200 free team of Anderson, Travers, Whitaker and Robitaille taking sixth in a season-best time (1:44.36), while the 200 medley squad of Whitaker, Robitaille, Giuliana Cogliani and Anderson also swam a season-best time and was seventh (1:57.20). Finally, the 400 free team of Travers, Cogliani, Maddy Rhoden and Izzy Morgese placed 11th.
“Those were the final high school swims for both Maddy and Izzy, who posted huge best times in the race to help secure the overall fifth-place finish,” said Triton coach Rebecca Burrell. “Congratulations to both of them for capping off their careers in spectacular fashion.”
Unfortunately, the Division 2 State Meet for the boys was postponed due to the weather, and will be made up some time this week.
