PLATTSBURGH — The Town of Plattsburgh has been designated a Clean Energy Community by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).
This prestigious recognition is part of NYSERDA’s initiative to support municipalities in implementing clean energy solutions and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The town was the first in Clinton County to be designated.
As a Clean Energy Community, the Town has continues to meet milestones in clean energy installations and data monitoring, qualifying it for awards based on its achievements. One of the significant accomplishments includes converting the town’s streetlights to energy-efficient LED lighting.
This conversion not only enhances public safety and reduces energy consumption but also earned the Town a $10,000 award.
The town has allocated this award toward purchasing electric landscaping and construction equipment for various departments, including highway, water, buildings and grounds and recreation — department selected equipment that would best address their needs and work.
The new electric equipment inventory comprises chainsaws, leaf blowers, weed trimmers and concrete saws. These tools will play a vital role in the town’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainability, environmental stewardship and harness opportunities to save taxpayers money.
“The new electric tools do more than save energy and cut emissions,” Highway Superintendent Greg Burnell said.
“They improve employee safety by removing harmful fumes adding to a healthier work environment.”
“The Town of Plattsburgh remains dedicated to pursuing additional clean energy projects and practices to foster a greener, more sustainable community,” Supervisor Michael Cashman said.
“We are committed to exploring innovative solutions and implementing effective strategies that not only reduce our environmental impact but also enhance our team’s ability to do their job.”
Trevor Cole, Senior Planner, also said, “Participating in the Clean Energy Communities program has provided a convenient path for implementing energy efficiency solutions in the Town.”
“We have been able to plan for and reduce our carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions by adopting new technologies like these battery-operated tools. The Town continues to move in this direction of resiliency and efficiency.”
