Town of Lockport officials are warning residents that road salt is currently in short supply.
“The Town of Lockport’s major salt provider is having a supply and distribution problem,” says a post on the town’s Facebook page. “Due to a shortage of road salt, the Town Highway Department needs to reduce usage now.”
Town officials say effective immediately, there will only be salting on main roads, as well as every intersection and stop sign location. The measure is in effect till further notice.
The town’s most recent supply of salt was supposed to be delivered last week, however, town official say they have yet to receive it.
“As always, please use caution when driving on all roads in the town, especially those portions that are not treated. As you know, we pride ourselves in taking great care of our roads, but unfortunately, we have no control over the availability of salt and are forced to take these measures,” the post states.
The issue is not unique to Lockport, the Town of Tonawanda is also cutting back on street salting following a supply shortage, according to its Facebook page.
Like Lockport, Tonawanda officials say they will only be salting the main roads, intersections, and stop sign locations.
The shortage is due to a “distribution and supply problem” by the town’s major salt supplier.
A salt shortage is affecting almost all area municipalities, according to Tonawanda, and some have asked the town to supply them with salt.
